Thrive Learning Hub CIC is looking for an enthusiastic and compassionate Maths Teacher to deliver engaging IGCSE and Functional Skills mathematics lessons to young people who are home educated or seeking a supportive alternative to mainstream school.
Our learners benefit from small-group teaching, positive relationships and an individualised approach. Many have SEND, anxiety or experience of Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA). We are therefore looking for someone who can build trust, adapt their teaching and help young people rediscover their confidence in mathematics.

Purpose of the role
To plan and deliver high-quality, engaging and inclusive mathematics lessons for young people working towards IGCSE Mathematics and Functional Skills Mathematics qualifications.The teacher will support home-educated learners and young people seeking an alternative to mainstream education. Many of our learners have SEND, anxiety or experience of Emotionally Based School Avoidance (EBSA).The successful candidate will create a calm, encouraging and supportive learning environment in which learners can overcome barriers, develop mathematical confidence and work towards meaningful qualifications.
Main responsibilities
Teaching and learning
- Plan, prepare and deliver engaging IGCSE and Functional Skills Mathematics lessons.
- Teach Functional Skills Mathematics from Entry Level through to Level 2, according to learners’ individual needs.
- Deliver the relevant IGCSE Edexcel Mathematics examination specification.
- Teach small groups containing learners with a range of abilities, starting points and learning profiles.
- Use varied, interactive and practical teaching approaches to develop learners’ mathematical fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills.
- Relate mathematics to everyday life, further education and employment.
- Differentiate teaching and resources to meet individual learning needs.
- Use scaffolding, adaptive teaching and appropriate assistive strategies to maximise learner success.
- Encourage learners to ask questions, take appropriate risks and become increasingly independent.
- Promote a positive attitude towards mathematics and help learners overcome previous negative educational experiences or maths anxiety.
Curriculum delivery
Plan and deliver the mathematical knowledge and skills required for IGCSE and Functional Skills qualifications, including:
- Number skills and calculation
- Fractions, decimals and percentages
- Ratio and proportion
- Algebra
- Geometry and measure
- Coordinate geometry
- Practical measurement and problem-solving
- Data handling and statistics
- Probability
- Financial mathematics and budgeting
- Mathematical reasoning in everyday contexts
The teacher will:
- Ensure appropriate coverage of the relevant IGCSE and Functional Skills specifications.
- Sequence learning carefully to build learners’ knowledge, understanding and confidence.
- Adapt curriculum content to reflect learners’ needs and qualification pathways.
- Contribute ideas for curriculum development, enrichment and intervention activities.
Assessment and learner progress
- Assess learners’ starting points and identify gaps in their mathematical knowledge.
- Establish appropriate individual learning targets.
- Use regular formative and summative assessment to monitor understanding and progress.
- Monitor learners’ progress against curriculum objectives and examination requirements.
- Mark work promptly and provide clear, constructive and encouraging feedback.
- Identify areas requiring further support and provide targeted intervention.
- Maintain accurate records of learners’ attainment, achievement and progress.
- Contribute to individual learner profiles and support plans where required.
Examination and assessment preparation
- Prepare learners thoroughly for IGCSE examinations and Functional Skills assessments.
- Teach effective examination techniques and problem-solving strategies.
- Help learners interpret examination questions, command words and mark schemes.
- Develop learners’ confidence in applying mathematical methods under assessment conditions.
- Prepare learners for paper-based and online Functional Skills assessments, where appropriate.
- Create revision resources, intervention materials and practice activities.
- Support learners through mock examinations, revision sessions and final assessments.
SEND and inclusion
Adapt teaching to support learners with needs that may include:
- Dyslexia
- Dyscalculia
- Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC)
- ADHD
- Anxiety

The teacher will:

Communication with parents and carers
- Develop positive and professional relationships with parents and carers.
- Provide regular and informative updates about learner progress.
- Attend parents’ evenings, review meetings and other meetings as required.
- Write clear end-of-year reports and other progress reports.
- Communicate concerns about progress, engagement or wellbeing to the appropriate member of staff.
Planning and administration
- Complete planning, preparation, assessment and progress monitoring during the additional paid hours allocated each week.
- Prepare engaging resources and differentiated learning activities in advance.
- Maintain accurate attendance, assessment and progress records.
- Upload assignments, resources and revision materials to Google Classroom.
- Meet agreed deadlines for planning, assessment, record-keeping and reporting.
- Handle learner information confidentially and in accordance with Thrive’s policies.
Safeguarding
- Safeguard and promote the welfare of all learners.
- Follow Thrive Learning Hub CIC’s safeguarding policies and procedures.
- Report safeguarding concerns promptly to the Designated Safeguarding Lead.
- Maintain appropriate professional boundaries at all times.
- Complete required safeguarding training and updates.
Team and professional responsibilities
- Work collaboratively with colleagues and contribute positively to the wider Thrive team.

Person specification
Essential
The successful candidate will:
- Have experience teaching mathematics to secondary-aged learners.
- Have knowledge and experience of delivering IGCSE Mathematics.
- Have knowledge and experience of delivering Functional Skills Mathematics.
- Understand how to plan from qualification specifications and assessment requirements.
- Have experience of differentiating learning for a range of abilities and starting points.
- Understand how SEND, anxiety and EBSA can affect a young person’s engagement with education.
- Be able to establish calm, positive and respectful relationships with young people.
- Be patient, adaptable, organised and reliable.
- Be able to work both independently and collaboratively.
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to safeguarding and inclusive practice.
- Have secure subject knowledge and confident written, verbal and digital communication skills.
Desirable
- A recognised teaching qualification.
- Qualified Teacher Status or Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills status.
- Experience working in alternative provision, SEND provision or a home-education setting.
- Experience teaching learners from Entry Level through to Level 2.
- Experience supporting young people who have experienced barriers to mainstream education.
- Knowledge of adaptive teaching and assistive learning strategies.
- Experience using Google Classroom or similar learning platforms.
