Job Overview
APN Group operates high volume debt recovery services supported by a technology platform built on Microsoft Azure, with SQL Server at its core and a range of API and file-based integrations connecting the Group to its clients and suppliers.
The Software Developer will work alongside the Group Technology Director, with primary responsibility for designing, building and publishing APIs, supported by ownership of the Azure infrastructure and SQL environment those APIs run on. The role suits a developer who is comfortable working independently: given an objective, you will plan your own approach, flag anything that needs sign-off, and deliver against it, with your work reviewed on completion rather than at every step. We want your view on the approach itself, not just delivery against it - if you see a better way, we want to hear it before you build, not after.
Responsibilities
- Design, build and publish APIs supporting the exchange of data between the Group's systems, clients and suppliers, from initial design through to live release.
- Take ownership of the full lifecycle of each API: versioning, documentation, testing and ongoing maintenance.
- Manage and maintain the Group's Azure infrastructure supporting these APIs, including application services, databases, networking and monitoring.
- Develop and optimise SQL, including queries, stored procedures, data corrections and reporting extracts against production-scale datasets.
- Plan your own work: translate objectives into a short written approach, raise risks or dependencies early, and proceed with minimal supervision once the approach is agreed.
- Build and maintain deployment pipelines for the APIs and services you own.
- Provide technical enablement to the wider business, including supporting the Operations department's AI and process improvement function with API access and data provision.
- Monitor, investigate and resolve incidents and issues across the systems you are responsible for.
- Produce and maintain clear technical documentation for all APIs, infrastructure and solutions delivered.
- Operate at all times within the security, data protection and compliance standards expected of a regulated debt recovery business.
About you
Essential
- Solid, demonstrable experience designing, building and publishing APIs in a mainstream language [e.g. C#/.NET, Python or Node.js], through professional work or substantial personal projects - ideally projects where you decided the approach yourself, not just built to someone else’s spec.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Azure, with practical experience deploying and managing live resources.
- Sound SQL skills, including confidence writing joins, aggregations and data updates, together with an appropriately careful approach to production data.
- The ability to work independently: given an objective, you can produce a short written plan, identify what needs approval, and deliver without close supervision.
- Clear, concise written communication to support that independent way of working.
- A strong sense of ownership over the systems you build, including their reliability once live.
- The confidence to question the current approach when you think there’s a better one, and to say so - we want someone who improves on what’s asked, not just someone who executes it.
Desirable
- Experience with Azure DevOps for CI/CD pipelines and release management (our preferred tooling).
- Experience of infrastructure as code (Bicep, ARM templates or Terraform).
- Exposure to Microsoft 365 administration or the Power Platform.
- Experience within a regulated sector such as financial services, debt recovery or legal services.
- An understanding of security fundamentals, including authentication, secrets management and the principle of least privilege.
