Role Overview
A fixed-term intern will support a targeted migration of the organisation’s main Power BI semantic model to a more efficient refresh and preparation pattern by moving existing transformation logic into Dataflows (Gen2 where available) and aligning the approach to Microsoft Fabric ways of working (capacity, OneLake, and governed workspaces). The aim is to achieve a like-for-like migration (not a redesign): reduce refresh time and failures, simplify supportability, and produce clear documentation and handover materials.
This opportunity is offered as a Fixed-Term Contract of 3 months
Objectives
-
Migrate existing data preparation steps out of the semantic model and into governed dataflows, maintainingthe same business outcomes and KPI results.
-
Adopt Fabric-aligned patterns where available (for example, using Dataflows Gen2 and consistent landing/curation conventions), improving operational support and lineage.
-
Improve refresh reliability and performance by standardising refresh configuration, reducing duplicated transformations, and enabling clearer troubleshooting.
-
Deliver a cutover-ready package: documentation, validation evidence, and a rollout plan the core team can execute safely.
Key responsibilities
-
Baseline the current semantic model refresh process: sources, transformation steps, refresh duration, failure modes, and dependency mapping.
-
Create a migration planidentifyingwhich queries/tables will move to dataflows first (staging then curated), including naming, folders, and ownership.
-
Build andvalidateDataflows (Gen2 where available), including parameterisation, refresh schedules, and gateway configuration ifrequired; align workspaces to Fabric governance and capacity constraints.
-
Update the existing semantic model to consume the dataflow outputs (like-for-like), avoiding unnecessary modelling changes; maintain KPI parity.
-
Run validation and reconciliation: row counts, key measurespot-checks, andagreed acceptance tests versus the current production outputs.
-
Support a safe cutover: propose release steps, rollback approach, and a communications checklist for affected report owners/users.
Produce runbooks and handover materials: refresh troubleshooting, lineage notes, and a backlog of further improvements (post-migration).
-
Deliverables
-
A set of governed dataflows (staging + curated) that reproduce the existing transformation logic for the main semantic model, with documented refresh configuration.
-
An updated semantic model connected to the dataflow outputs withlike-for-likeresults (validated KPI parity) and improved refresh performance/stability where achievable.
-
A validation pack: reconciliation checks, acceptance test results, and a record of any known differences/limitations.
-
A cutover plan including release steps, rollback approach, and communications checklist for report owners.
-
Runbook and handover pack: dataflow design notes, troubleshooting guide, and a prioritised backlog of post-migration enhancements.
Our ideal candidate
-
Working knowledge of Power BI and Power Query (M); understanding of relational modelling and star schema basics.
-
Previous experience (academic or practical) with data extraction and modelling—for example, pulling data from Dynamics 365/APIs/SQL and shaping it into analytical tables.
-
Curiosity for performance tuning concepts (query folding, reducing transformations in the model, refresh patterns).
-
Strong documentation habits and comfort working to standards and checklists.
-
Bonus: familiarity with Dataflows (including Gen2), SQL basics, or a data engineering course/module.
