We are looking for an Advanced Research Engineer to join our Mechatronics and Machines Team. The role is primarily focused on the technical delivery of projects and programmes across the MTC. You will report to our team lead and work across various technology departments, industrial sectors, and customers.

Largely independent delivery of larger project's technical deliverables

Acting as Technical Lead for smaller projects where required; ensuring work meets or exceeds agreed customer requirements, within agreed budgets and timescales.

This role will require involvement in all aspects of the project delivery including but not restricted to: in-depth research, concept generation, detailed design, generation of technical drawings, ensuring compliance with all relevant standards, technical support of commissioning, awareness of project budget and deliverables.

Proactive approach in the identification, technical specification, and delivery of new and novel technology capability into the MTC, undertaking innovative Engineering research work focused primarily on technology/manufacturing readiness levels (TRL/MRL) 3+.

The candidate will be degree educated holding one of the following: BSc, BEng, MSc or MEng in an appropriate Mechanical Engineering or suitable Engineering discipline.

The candidate will have at least 5-10 years mechanical and/or manufacturing engineering experience, with specialisation in Machines or Automation.

Demonstrable experience of designing machinery, manufacturing equipment or products.

Able to demonstrate industrial project delivery including, but not restricted to: in-depth research, concept generation, detailed design, ensuring compliance with all relevant standards, technical support of commissioning, demonstrable ability to work to project budget and deliverable timelines.

Able to generate technical drawings in compliance with BS888 standard.

Working knowledge of materials, relevant directives, regulations and standards, mechanical principles, and manufacturing techniques.

Working knowledge of Siemens NX, Solidworks, or other CAD software package.

Working knowledge of sensors and instrumentation.

Working knowledge of data logging and analysis.

An ability to liaise with clients and industrial members, whilst working with the team to budget and plan engineering projects across various industrial sectors. Helping to develop design specifications, statement of requirements and feasibility studies.

Demonstrable knowledge of problem-solving tools and error-proofing techniques, escalating and resolving them where possible.

Able to demonstrate best practise technical report and presentation writing skills; as well as an ability to present clearly and confidently at all levels within or outside the organisation

Capable of identifying project and business risks, escalating for consideration.

Pragmatic hands-on experience, providing problem solving approach and who is willing to physically participate in completion of work when required.

Awareness or working knowledge of electrical, electronic, pneumatic, or hydraulic components.

Experience or awareness of using PLC hardware, Arduino, or Raspberry Pi.

Experience in any relevant programming language.

Experience working with the Machinery Directive and CE/UKCA marking guidelines.

To have achieved or be in the process of achieving Chartered Engineer Status

The Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) was established in 2010 as an independent Research & Technology Organisation (RTO) with the objective of bridging the gap between academia and industry – often referred to as ‘the valley of death’.
It represents one of the largest public sector investments in UK manufacturing and, after four years of planning and a 16 month build, the facility opened at Ansty Park in Coventry at the end of 2011.
In December 2011, there were 16 industrial members, 44 staff and just a few key pieces of equipment in the ‘workshop’.
Over the following seven years the MTC’s rapid growth has seen the expansion of our campus with the construction of three more facilities, including the opening of the Advanced Manufacturing Training Centre and the National Centre for Additive Manufacturing.
Our role has also increased to cover not only R&D but also Training, Advanced Manufacturing Management and Factory Design.
We now have over 700 talented employees working with us.
During this time we have helped hundreds of companies across a range of industries and over 100 of them have become members of the MTC.
