Role Purpose

The Learning and Mentoring Lead is responsible for leading the delivery of high-quality, personalised learning and mentoring support for young people within our Alternative Provision. The role combines teaching, pastoral care, and mentoring to support learners who may have experienced barriers to education, including SMEH and SEND, ensuring they engage, progress, and achieve positive outcomes and transitions.

The post holder will also support and guide Learning Mentors in delivering functional skills provision effectively.

Key ResponsibilitiesTeaching and Learning

Plan and deliver engaging, differentiated learning tailored to individual learner needs.
Support Learning Mentors to plan and deliver functional skills (e.g. English, maths and independance) sessions to a high standard.
Assess, track, and monitor learner progress, adapting teaching strategies accordingly.
Develop individual learning plans (ILPs) aligned with each learner’s academic and personal development goals.
Provide targeted intervention to support literacy, numeracy, and functional skills.
Maintain accurate records of attendance, progress, and attainment.

Mentoring and Pastoral Support

Act as a key mentor for learners, building strong, trusting relationships.
Support learners with behavioural, emotional, and social development.
Promote positive behaviour strategies and de-escalation techniques.
Liaise with families/carers and external professionals to support holistic outcomes.
Identify safeguarding concerns and follow appropriate procedures.

Leadership and Programme Development

Lead on the design and implementation of learning and mentoring programmes.
Provide guidance, coaching, and oversight to Learning Mentors, particularly in the delivery of functional skills.
Model best practice in teaching and mentoring for other staff.
Contribute to the development of policies and procedures within the provision.
Support quality assurance and continuous improvement of provision standards.
Ensure the learning environment is inclusive, safe, and engaging.

Person SpecificationEssential

Qualified teacher status (QTS) or significant teaching experience in a formal or informal education setting.
Proven experience working with young people with additional needs (e.g. SEMH, SEND, or disengaged learners).
Strong understanding of differentiated teaching and trauma-informed approaches.
Driving licence essential
Experience of mentoring or pastoral support roles.
Experience supporting or leading delivery of functional skills (English and maths).
Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
Ability to manage behaviour positively and effectively.
Good organisational and record-keeping skills.
Safeguarding knowledge and commitment to safeguarding practices.

Desirable

Experience working in Alternative Provision or similar settings.
Training in safeguarding, behaviour management, or therapeutic approaches.
Leadership or supervisory experience.
