Full job description

We are seeking a friendly, reliable, and hardworking Garden Centre Shop Assistant to join our team on an initial 6-month temporary contract, with the potential for the position to be extended based on business needs and performance.

This is a varied role that combines customer service, retail duties, and plant care. The successful candidate will help ensure the garden centre is well-presented, fully stocked, and provides an excellent shopping experience for customers.

Key Responsibilities

Providing excellent customer service and assisting customers with enquiries and purchases.
Operating the till and processing cash, card, and other payment transactions accurately.
Handling cash securely and following company cash-handling procedures.
Creating, maintaining, and replenishing attractive product and plant displays.
Caring for plants, including watering, feeding, pruning, and general maintenance.
Receiving, unpacking, and stocking deliveries.
Carrying out heavy lifting and moving stock, compost, plants, garden furniture, and other products as required.
Maintaining high standards of cleanliness, presentation, and safety throughout the garden centre.
Assisting with seasonal promotions, merchandising, and stock rotation.
Supporting colleagues across different departments when required.

Requirements

Previous retail or customer service experience is essential.
Confidence in operating tills and handling cash accurately.
A positive, friendly, and approachable manner.
Good communication and teamwork skills.
An interest in gardening, horticulture, or plants would be advantageous.
Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions when required.
Physically fit and capable of undertaking regular heavy lifting and manual handling tasks.
Flexible with shift pattern as this role involves weekend work.
Reliable, flexible, and willing to take on a variety of duties.
