Background

The Sheffield Cats Shelter are looking to fill roles at our new store in Chapeltown and our established store on Hillsborough High Street. We are looking for Managers and Retail Assistants and the hours will range from 3 to 5 days for the right people. If you have a passion for animal welfare and charity shopping and either of these roles fit your skills and experience we want to hear from you!

Purpose of the Role

The Charity Shop Manager is responsible for the successful day-to-day running of the shop, ensuring it is profitable, efficient, and managed in line with the values of The Sheffield Cats Shelter. The main focus of the role is to achieve sales targets, maintain a steady flow of stock, and encourage high-quality donations. You will create a welcoming environment for our charity customers and donors, ensure the team provides excellent service, and lead a dedicated group of colleagues and volunteers to support the charity’s vital work.

Key Tasks & Responsibilities1. Store Operations & Team Management

Manage daily shop operations, including opening and closing procedures, and ensuring cash handling is managed correctly.
Manage and improve the shop's stock displays, identifying new ways to increase sales, encourage donations, and drive Gift Aid sign-ups.
Report on shop progress and suggest ideas to improve overall performance.
Build positive, open working relationships with charity colleagues, customers, volunteers, and wider organizational stakeholders.
Lead, support, and supervise retail assistants and volunteers, delegating tasks effectively and maintaining high standards.
Assist with the recruitment, onboarding, and ongoing training of volunteers to build a supportive and friendly team.
Maintain flexibility to help cover holidays, peak trading periods, and unplanned leave when required.

2. Sales & Customer Engagement

Drive sales & Gift Aid to meet or exceed the targets set by the Charity, helping to raise vital funds for the charity.
Work with the team on local marketing and social media initiatives (such as Facebook) to boost shop footfall and raise awareness.
Monitor local high street trends to ensure our shop remains competitive and appealing to customers.
Maintain high standards of customer service, ensuring every charity customer and donor has a positive experience.
Proactively encourage stock donations and help coordinate collections when necessary.

3. Stock Management & Merchandising

Oversee stock levels and displays to ensure we achieve the best possible value from community donations, while identifying new ways to increase sales and drive Gift Aid sign-ups.
Identify special or collectable items that may be suitable for online sales platforms (such as eBay) or local auction houses.
Ensure stock is rotated regularly and update window displays and shop layouts for seasons or promotions to keep the shop fresh.
Supervise the sorting and packing of stock for recycling schemes, ensuring the team follows safe manual handling guidelines.

4. Financial Integrity & Security

Follow the charity’s established financial procedures for handling money and completing daily paperwork.
Accurately reconcile daily takings and manage banking procedures, ensuring cash is securely locked away.
Act as the primary key holder, taking responsibility for the security of the premises, stock, and safe.
Ensure the team understands and follows basic security measures to keep everyone safe.

5. Premises, Health & Safety

Keep both the shop floor and the stockrooms clean, organised, and free from hazards.
Conduct regular checks on shop equipment and promptly report any maintenance or repair issues to the Retail Manager.
Ensure the shop complies with Health & Safety regulations by providing clear guidance and safety briefings to volunteers and colleagues.
