About the role
Tutor Doctor is looking for engaging, reliable and knowledgeable GCSE Maths Tutors to support students across Westhoughton, Bolton, Wigan, Atherton, Hindley, Chorley and the surrounding areas. We are particularly interested in tutors who can support students who are capable, but may be underperforming due to low confidence, poor motivation, gaps in understanding, ADHD, organisation difficulties or a lack of consistent study habits.
This role is not just about teaching maths content. It is about helping students rebuild confidence, understand topics clearly, develop better working habits and feel more prepared for GCSEs.
This is primarily an in-person tutoring role, so applicants must be local to the area or able to travel reliably to students’ homes.
What we are looking for We are looking for tutors who can support with:
- GCSE Maths
- Foundation and Higher tier content - Maths confidence and problem solving
- Exam preparation and revision
- Topic gap identification
- Mock exam review -
Study skills and organisation
- Homework completion and accountability
- Students who may struggle with focus, motivation or consistency
The right tutor will be able to explain concepts clearly, adapt their approach and build rapport with teenagers who may not always find school easy or may have become disengaged.
Essential requirements
Applicants must:
- Have strong knowledge of GCSE Maths
- Be confident supporting Foundation and/or Higher tier students
- Be able to explain maths in a clear, practical and accessible way
- Be patient, reliable, encouraging and professional
- Be able to build rapport with secondary school students
- Be comfortable supporting students who may lack confidence or motivation
- Be willing to adapt sessions around each student’s needs and personality
- Be available for in-person tutoring in the local area
- Have, or be willing to obtain, an enhanced DBS check
- Be able to provide references Desirable experience
The following would be beneficial but not essential:
- Experience supporting students with ADHD, autism, dyslexia or other SEND needs
- Experience helping students with organisation, focus and study routines
- Experience with GCSE exam preparation
- Experience supporting students around grades 3–6
- Experience working with disengaged or anxious learners
- Teaching, tutoring, mentoring or classroom support experience
- Ability to support Science alongside Maths would be an advantage What tutoring may involve Sessions may include:
- Reviewing current schoolwork and mock results
- Identifying gaps in understanding
- Teaching priority GCSE Maths topics - Practising exam-style questions
- Helping students decide whether Foundation or Higher tier is most appropriate
- Building confidence through manageable challenge
- Supporting revision planning and task completion
- Helping students break work into smaller, achievable steps
- Encouraging students to ask for help before frustration turns into avoidance
- Providing clear feedback on progress
The aim is to help students feel more confident, more organised and better prepared for GCSE Maths.
About Tutor Doctor
Tutor Doctor provides personalised one-to-one tutoring for students in their homes and online. We carefully match tutors based not only on subject knowledge, but also personality, learning style and the student’s individual needs. As a tutor, you are not simply given a name and left to get on with it. You will be briefed properly on each student’s needs, supported throughout the programme and matched only where we believe there is a strong fit. Pay Pay will be agreed based on experience, subject knowledge and the specific nature of each assignment.
Typical rate: £15- £25 per hour

This is primarily an in-person role covering the Tutor Doctor territory, including: - Westhoughton - Hindley - Atherton - Bolton - Wigan - Leigh - Leyland and surrounding areas
Applicants must be able to travel reliably to students’ homes.
