We are currently seeking a Compliance & Operations Officer to become a core part of our team tasked with keeping the day‑to‑day running of chambers smooth, organised and welcoming.
The successful candidate needs to be passionate about supporting professional excellence, have strong organisational and communication skills and be able to adapt to working alone and within a larger team.
Role Purpose
The purpose of this role is to ensure compliance with legislative and regulatory requirements, manage the office functions, ensuring that Barristers and Staff are properly supported to work to their best and to provide human resources support to Chambers.
The role will involve liaison with Senior Clerks, the Financial Controller and Chambers Management Committee (Mancom), to ensure that Chambers is appropriately resourced and remains compliant with evolving legislation and guidance.
Key Responsibilities:
Regulatory Requirements, Policies, GDPR, Health & Safety
Working independently and as part of a committee to ensure chambers and its members are consistently compliant in relevant regulatory areas such as health & safety, (including DSE assessments), data protection, equality & diversity and others.
Ensuring chambers and its members are adhering to Bar Standards Board regulations including assisting in BMIF renewals, ICO registration reminders and other matters.
Responsible for completing the company’s annual confirmation statement with Companies House, ensuring all statutory information is accurate and up to date, including the registered office address, current directors, and individuals with significant control.
Working with Mancom and the Head of Chambers
Scheduling and attending Mancom/ACM meetings, to take minutes and to provide operational and people reports.
Supporting the Head of Chambers on chambers’ strategic priorities and contributing to longer‑term planning alongside the Senior Clerks.
Complaints
Client complaints administration (but not responsible for investigation of complaints or responding to them, a function which will remain with the Senior Complaints Manager in the first instance)
Building / Infrastructure
Responsible for building renovation/upgrade projects and the ongoing maintenance, safety and upkeep of premises, within an agreed budget.
Organising the annual renewal of insurance policies including Buildings and contents, Public liability, Employers’ liability, Cyber security and Directors Insurance.
Managing procurement of contracts for Chambers’ services and facilities such as the building contractors, Library subscriptions, Cleaning company contracts, Printing contracts, Gas, Electric and other building/ office services.
HR
Supporting human resources functions within Chambers to include ensuring that Chambers has in place appropriate policies/training and appraisal procedures in place for both Barristers and Staff.
Facilitating the collection, collation, and publication of Equality & Diversity data for Chambers as required by the BSB.
Reviewing the fair allocation of work to Barristers by providing financial and diversity data reports as agreed/discussed with the Equality Data Officer.
Responsible for onboarding Staff, Pupils and Barristers with policies, procedures and IT and arranging exit interviews for leavers.
Pupillage
Ensuring that we are compliant with our AETO Status. Assisting with Barrister recruitment and specifically that Pupillage and Mini-Pupillage selection processes are run efficiently and are compliant with Bar Standards Board requirements.
Reports to: Senior Criminal Clerk
Hours: 40 hours per week
Working location: Predominantly office based, 56 Queen Square, Bristol.
Salary range: £34,000 – £38,000
Holiday: 25 days plus Bank Holidays
