Main purpose of role:
To support the unit manager in the education and development of learners by providing direction, care and supervision to all students, including those who have social, emotional and other additional learning needs, in the classroom and workshop settings.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Under the direction of the unit manager:
· Support the vocational and academic activities of individuals or groups of children to facilitate their learning and ensure their safety.
· Be confident to deliver literacy and numeracy content to students, often on a 1 to 1 basis.
· To help plan effective teaching sessions and support the development of short and long term schemes of learning.
· Build positive relationships to become a trusted adult and a suitable role model whilst supporting students’ personal development.
· Provide emotional support to encourage students to succeed and develop their resilience.
· Monitor individual students’ progress and achievements, identify barriers to success, and report to the responsible person as appropriate.
· Contribute to the culture and ethos of ALP England to maintain the positive atmosphere and promote our successful working environment.
· To contribute to ALP England’s commitment to safeguarding and the wellbeing of all learners.
Responsibilities and tasks may include the following:
· Deliver learning activities in the unit. Facilitate the progress of individuals (one to one), or groups of students as required.
· Contribute to the behaviour management of all students and provide support with unit procedures, reporting concerns as appropriate.
· Promote students’ independence in learning, reinforcing students’ self-esteem through regular praise and encouragement.
· Prepare and maintain equipment and teaching resources for sessions and activities when required.
· Encourage a health and safety approach to the use of all equipment and materials provided.
· Prepare or clear the classroom or workshop as directed before and after sessions.
· Provide support by undertaking photocopying, filing and recording of information.
· Be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, health and safety, confidentiality and GDPR, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person.
· Assist with group activities within and away from the provision, such as P.E outings, reward trips or educational visits.
· Assist with the implementation of programmes designed by other professionals such as educational psychologists and speech and language therapists.
· Liaise with other professional staff and report information from/to parents/carers and contribute to meetings discussing students’ progress as appropriate.
· Attend and participate in relevant meetings as required.
· Complete professional development activities as required.
· Undertake other duties and responsibilities as required by the directors.
Job Requirements
Knowledge:
An interest in working within an Alternative Learning Provision.
Confidence in working with secondary school age children of a variety of abilities and backgrounds.
Basic knowledge of equal opportunities in the workplace.
Hold a SEND qualification (desirable).
An understanding of child protection and safeguarding requirements.
Skills and abilities:
Able to demonstrate a strong standard of written and spoken English and numeracy skills.
Able to work constructively as part of a team and be able to communicate well with children and adults.
To be able to use basic computer technology.
To be able to plan effective teaching sessions.
A motivated, resilient attitude and commitment to supporting children.
Ability to self-evaluate learning needs.
Understand the importance of maintaining confidentiality.
Employ a flexible approach and a willingness to help out where needed.
Experience:
Experience of planning effective teaching sessions and contributing to schemes of learning. (desirable)
Experience working with students who have SEND needs. (desirable)
Age:
Applicants must be 18 or older on commencement of employment.
Hours of Work
Term time only, 08:30 to 14:30
30 hours per week.
Educational:
Interest in completing ongoing CPD.
