Highview Power Carrington – LAES Project (FOAK)
50 MW / 300 MWh Liquid Air Energy Storage Facility | Greater Manchester
First‑of‑a‑kind, commercial‑scale greenfield delivery of a 50 MW / 300 MWh Liquid Air Energy Storage (LAES) facility, supporting long‑duration energy storage and the UK’s net‑zero transition.
The project utilises proprietary LAES technology, converting surplus renewable electricity into stored liquid air, with later pressurisation and reheating to drive turbines for electricity generation.
Role / Scope (Bilfinger UK):
- Principal contractor for Mechanical, Electrical & Instrumentation (MEI) construction, including structural steelwork
- Delivery of complex, safety‑critical systems within a novel technology environment
- Working within a large high‑performing, multi‑disciplinary integrated delivery team on a technically challenging FOAK scheme
A landmark project combining innovation, engineering excellence, and collaboration to deliver one of the UK’s most advanced energy storage assets.
We are recruiting an experienced General Foreman to lead site logistics, workforce management, and day-to-day coordination of trades on the Highview Liquid Air Energy Storage project at Carrington.
The role suits a hands-on construction professional with proven large-project experience across sectors such as Power, Energy-from-Waste, Cryogenic, LNG, Chemical, Petrochemical, Pharmaceutical, or Nuclear, capable of managing multi-discipline workforces from early enabling activities through to mechanical completion.
The successful candidate will report to the Construction Manager and work closely with the Superintendents, HSE, QA/QC, and subcontractors to ensure work fronts are properly resourced, materials and plant are in the right place at the right time, and the workforce is delivering safely, productively, and to programme.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and coordinate day-to-day site activities across mechanical, piping, structural, and civil trades in line with the construction programme.
- Manage and direct the workforce — own labour, subcontractors, and supply chain — ensuring resources are deployed to the right work fronts.
- Lead daily site briefings, toolbox talks, and pre-task discussions to communicate scope, sequencing, and safety expectations.
- Oversee site logistics — laydown areas, material handling, storage, deliveries, traffic management, and access/egress routes.
- Coordinate plant, lifting equipment, scaffolding, and small tools to ensure trades have what they need to work productively.
- Work closely with the Lifting Supervisor / Appointed Person on lift planning, exclusion zones, and crane coordination.
- Drive a strong safety culture on site, with authority to stop unsafe work and intervene when standards slip.
- Support the implementation of RAMS, permits to work, and safe systems of work at the workface.
- Monitor productivity, identify blockers, and feed back to the Superintendents and Construction Manager to keep the programme on track.
- Manage interfaces between trades and subcontractors to prevent clashes and minimise downtime.
- Track labour hours, allocations, and timesheets in conjunction with the project administration team.
- Maintain housekeeping, welfare, and waste management standards across the site.
- Support handover of completed work fronts to QA/QC and follow-on trades, ensuring punch items are closed out promptly.
Essential Requirements
- Proven General Foreman experience on large-scale construction projects.
- Strong man management skills, with a track record of leading multi-discipline workforces and subcontractors.
- Demonstrable site logistics experience — laydown, materials, plant, and access management.
- Trade background (mechanical, piping, or steel erecting) with progression into supervisory roles.
- SMSTS or SSSTS; CCNSG Safety Passport; full understanding of CDM and site safety regulations.
- Working knowledge of RAMS, permits to work, and safe systems of work.
- Confident interfacing with Construction Managers, Superintendents, HSE, QA/QC, and subcontractors.
Desirable
- Power, Cryogenic, LNG, or Energy-from-Waste sector experience would be a distinct advantage.
- Temporary Works Appreciation and Coordination.
- First Aid at Work and Fire Marshal training.
- Experience with digital site platforms (FieldView, Asite, or equivalent).
