Headway H.E.L.P Welfare & Benefits Advisor

Location: Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge + Community Support Across Cambridgeshire
Part-Time – 22.5 Hours per Week

Salary: £31,000–£33,000 FTE (depending on experience)

About Us

Headway Cambridge & Peterborough is a specialist brain injury charity supporting adults affected by acquired brain injury and stroke, along with their families and carers. We provide practical, emotional, and community-based support to help people rebuild confidence, independence, and quality of life after brain injury.

About the Role

We are looking for a compassionate and proactive Welfare & Benefits Advisor to join our hospital-based Headway H.E.L.P. team at Addenbrooke’s Hospital.

This rewarding role supports patients and families affected by serious brain injury, helping them understand and access the financial, welfare, and community support available to them during an incredibly difficult time.

You will provide welfare benefits advice, support applications and appeals, and work closely with hospital teams, social care, and community organisations to ensure patients receive the right support at the right time,

Key Responsibilities

Provide welfare benefits advice and practical support to patients and families throughout their hospital admission and recovery pathway — from initial bedside support on the ward through to rehabilitation, discharge planning, and ongoing community support following discharge from hospital
Support applications, appeals, and assessment processes including PIP and related benefits
Help patients navigate health, social care, and community support systems
Liaise with hospital staff, rehabilitation teams, and external agencies
Advocate for patients and families to ensure their needs are understood and supported
Promote the Headway H.E.L.P service within the hospital and wider community
Maintain accurate records and provide follow-up support where needed

About You

We are looking for someone who is:
✔ Experienced in welfare benefits advice, advocacy, & community support
✔ Compassionate, organised, and person-centred
✔ Confident supporting vulnerable adults and people in crisis
✔ A strong communicator with excellent listening skills
✔ Able to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team

Experience supporting people with brain injury is desirable but not essential — full training will be provided.

Essential Requirements

Qualification or extensive training in welfare benefits
Minimum 1 year’s experience providing welfare benefits advice and advocacy
Experience working with vulnerable adults
Fluent in English
