SAW OPERATIVE
West Sussex Office Furniture Ltd is a leading manufacturing distributor specialising in commercial office and educational furniture, based in Chichester.
We are currently seeking a skilled and motivated SAW Operative to join our team in the MILL department. The ideal candidate will have the ability to be flexible and work in various departments within the factory as needed. Full training will be provided to candidates who demonstrate a genuine interest in developing a career in manufacturing.
Key Details:
- Department: MILL (with flexibility to work in other factory areas)
- Hours: 39:00 hours per week (Mon–Thu 07:30am – 16:30pm, Fri 07:30am – 12:30pm)

Main Responsibilities:
SAW Machine & Edger Machine Operation
- Measuring, cutting, and preparing natural and engineered wood for saw machinery operations.
- Operating Homag SAW to precise specifications from technical drawings.
- Operating Biesse Stream A Edge Banding Machine, setting up and operating according to specifications.
- Properly feeding wood panels and adjusting settings for quality edge banding.
- Inspecting finished products for defects and ensuring quality standards are met.
- Achieving daily production targets according to schedules and completing jobs on time to meet dispatch deadlines.
- Working with high attention to detail to ensure accurate measurements.
- Minimising material wastage through careful planning and execution.
- Conducting quality checks on materials prior to CNC processing.
- Cleaning and maintaining saw machinery and tools and reporting technical faults promptly.
- Ensuring compliance with Health & Safety procedures and always wearing appropriate PPE.
Forklift Operation
- Operating a counterbalance forklift to move, position, and manage oversized and heavy wood panels throughout the factory.
- Manoeuvring the forklift confidently and safely within tight spaces and a busy factory environment.
- Handling large-format panels with care and precision to avoid damage to materials and equipment.
- Supporting the wider team with material handling and stock movement as required.
Requirements:
- Valid Counterbalance Forklift Licence is essential.
- Proven experience operating a forklift in a manufacturing or industrial environment, including handling oversized loads and working in confined or tight spaces.
- Previous experience working within a fast-paced manufacturing environment is essential.
- Previous experience operating machinery and hand power tools.
- High attention to detail and level of accuracy.
- Strong organisational skills with a can-do attitude and focus on meeting deadlines and targets.
- Excellent communication skills, fluent in English.
- Numeracy and literacy with the ability to read paperwork and understand measurements.
- Excellent attendance and timekeeping.
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Willingness to learn and work overtime when required.
Physical Requirements:
This is a physically demanding role suited to a candidate who is fit, active, and comfortable with the rigours of a busy factory environment. The role involves:
- Standing for lengthy periods throughout the working day.
- Working in both warm and cold temperatures.
- Repeated lifting, carrying, and manoeuvring of heavy and oversized products and panels.
- The physical stamina and strength required to handle large materials safely and efficiently on a daily basis.
