We are seeking a talented, proactive and commercially minded Engineering Buyer to join our dynamic team. The ideal candidate will have a minimum 5 years experience in a buyer role within a machinery manufacturing or similar engineered manufacturing environment (e.g. capital equipment, automation, special purpose machinery) purchasing technical components, materials, services or assemblies and must hold CIPS qualification (at least Level 4 diploma)
The Engineering Buyer will own and manage the purchasing function ensuring the timely and cost effective procurement of materials, components and services in line with production schedules, quality standards and commercial objectives.
MAIN TASKS
1. Ensure all parts and services are in line with the order book, R&D development schedule and agreed delivery dates.
2. Design and implement the supply chain strategy ensuring on time delivery while proactively identifying and communicating potential risks to the business.
3. Establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with key suppliers including regular supplier visits, hosting on site supplier reviews and conducting supplier audits to assess compliance, quality and performance, while identifying risks and implementing mitigation plans to ensure reliability and efficiency.
4. Implement and manage an approval process for internal purchase requests.
5. Mitigate risks associated with supply disruptions, geopolitical challenges, marker volatility and other potential threats.
6. Maintain a close working relationship with finance by regularly discussing budgets, spend forecasts, cost variances and purchase approvals ensuring alignment and timely communication on any financial impacts or risks.
7. Collaborate closely with the commercial team to manage OEM goods.
8. Develop, implement and maintain supplier performance measurement processes covering on time delivery, quality and responsiveness.
9. Proactively communicate with suppliers to confirm delivery commitments in advance, identifying and resolving potential delays before they impact production.
10. Coordinate with all departments to ensure that the relevant parts are in accordance with the schedule and resolving issues within a timely manner.
11. Report on KPI’s to Head of Operations suggesting improvements to lower costs, lead times and continuous improvement strategies.
12. Secure timely availability of raw materials, components, and sub-assemblies.
13. Prevent stock-outs that could halt manufacturing lines.
14. Balance stock levels to avoid both shortages and excess stock.
15. Negotiate competitive prices with suppliers and contractors.
16. Implement and manage a key/preferred supplier list to ensure consistent sourcing, improved performance and strong supplier partnerships.
17. Review any defects, rework, and warranty claims and feedback to suppliers and the Head of Operations.
18. Identify new suppliers regarding cost downs, better delivery or better quality from dependable suppliers.
19. Reduce dependency on single suppliers for critical parts
20. Develop long-term partnerships for key or bespoke components
21. Improve forecast accuracy of spend relative to stock control
22. Understand and assess supplier quality management systems, ensuring alignment with company quality standards and ISO 9001 requirements.
23. Visit suppliers as required to resolve quality, delivery or capacity issues.
24. Manage and optimise material and supplier related costs in line with budget and operational requirements.
