Nursery Practitioner / 1:1 Support (BSL Level 2)
Hours: Term-time only - Monday 8:30-4:30, Tuesday–Friday 8:30-3:30
We’re looking for a caring, patient and proactive Nursery Practitioner to join our team, providing dedicated 1:1 support for a child who is autistic and profoundly deaf. Autism is the child’s primary need, so experience working with children with autism and managing behaviours is essential.
You’ll use British Sign Language (BSL Level 2) alongside visuals, now and next boards, and other communication aids to help the child engage with learning, build social skills, and feel included within the nursery environment.
When your 1:1 child is absent, you’ll work as part of the wider team, supporting in the room, covering lunches, and occasionally working in other settings.
What you’ll do:
- Support and integrate the child into group activities, encouraging participation and social interaction
- Plan and deliver engaging, child-led activities linked to their interests and development goals
- Use BSL, visuals, and tailored resources to aid understanding and communication
- Provide intimate care when needed
- Manage behavioural needs calmly and consistently
- Liaise closely with parents, the SENCO, and external professionals
- Complete observations, assessments, and paperwork, with one longer day a week for planning
What we’re looking for:
- BSL Level 2 (minimum)
- Proven experience supporting children with autism and behavioural needs
- Patient, understanding, and able to build strong relationships with children, families, and colleagues
- A team player who can also work independently in a 1:1 role
Why join us?
- We're a family business offering a supportive, welcoming team environment
- Unique opportunities for travel to Malawi on offer
- Competitive salary and 3% performance bonus
- Dedicated planning time
- Opportunities for further training in SEND and BSL
- The chance to make a real difference in a child’s life
