Job Title: Senior Research Engineer – OT Cyber Security

Location: Coventry, UK

Job Type: Permanent

Working hours: 36 Hours per week (Flexible Working Week)

Salary: £50,000 - £60.000 per annum DOE

Key Responsibilities

The aim of this role is to support the industrial cyber security strategy within MTC engineering teams, to deliver internal capabilities around connected manufacturing security and to work with our customers to understand requirements and prepare bids for research and development projects.

Develop and mature MTC’s cyber security frameworks, tools, and methodologies tailored to advanced manufacturing environments.

Work with colleagues and technology partners to further expand MTC’s capabilities in this domain, to deliver impact for UK manufacturing.

Support MTC’s Digital Transformation Advisors with customer cyber security queries, and knowledge on implementation and adherence to national cyber security standards such as Cyber Essentials +, NIST and CAF.

Work with MTC’s technology partners to maintain and expand testbeds to demonstrate cyber security best practices in the OT domain (network monitoring, asset management, etc.)

Keeping abreast of latest developments in standards and technologies in the cyber security domain, in relation to OT and critical national infrastructure.

Create and maintain collateral to keep our customers informed about the latest guidance, legislation and best practice. (including supporting bi-annual cyber security working group meeting for MTC members)

Support MTC Business Development (BD) with proposal writing to win collaborative research & industrial projects in the cyber security domain.

Provide clear communication and presentations to technical and non-technical stakeholders and manage relationships with customers and suppliers to align their cybersecurity expectations.

Key Skills & Experience

Experience in working in an OT environment, with good knowledge of manufacturing challenges relating to connected manufacturing assets, and cyber resilience.
Drive the future development of cybersecurity frameworks tailored to manufacturing environments.
Delivery of strategic objectives and thought leadership activities for cyber security challenges within an organisation.
Ability to stay keep abreast of emerging threats and new technologies to ensure cyber resilience in connected manufacturing environments.
Awareness of relevant cyber security standards and frameworks, such as NIST CSF, UK Cyber Essentials Scheme, OWASP guidance (incl. on AI), IEC 62443, legislation on cyber resilience including EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) and UK PTSI.

Desirable Skills & Experience

Skills and knowledge in the RF domain (civil bands). e.g. experience with working with Faraday enclosures and RF monitoring solutions such as Kestrel or Spike spectrum analyser.
Familiarity with network and infrastructure design and the implementation of secure by-design principles. ]
Knowledge of IoT environments, edge device implementation and security, and shop floor connectivity supporting the convergence of IT/OT.
Experience with penetration testing techniques, and their applicability to device and hardware level security.
Experience with network monitoring systems and security tools (SIEM, Wireshark, TAPs)
Exposure to AI systems integration in manufacturing environment and security implications.
Experience administrating and maintaining Linux systems, containerised platforms, and hypervisor technologies.

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in cyber security, computer science, information systems, or relevant industrial/commercial experience
7+ years of experience in cyber security roles, preferably in OT/IT environments, with a focus on strategy and alignment to internal roadmaps.
Optional MSc in cyber security, computer science or other relevant STEM fields.
Relevant certifications are a plus, for example OSCP+, OSDA, CISSP and GISCP. Soft Skills
Strong communication and presentation skills to both internal and external stakeholders.
Ability to work collaboratively across departments and with external partners.
Mindset for continuous development of new skills and knowledge.
Analytical mindset with attention to detail and problem-solving abilities.

The Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) was established in 2010 as an independent Research & Technology Organisation (RTO) with the objective of bridging the gap between academia and industry – often referred to as ‘the valley of death’.

It represents one of the largest public sector investments in UK manufacturing and, after four years of planning and a 16 month build, the facility opened at Ansty Park in Coventry at the end of 2011.

In December 2011, there were 16 industrial members, 44 staff and just a few key pieces of equipment in the ‘workshop’.

Over the following seven years the MTC’s rapid growth has seen the expansion of our campus with the construction of three more facilities, including the opening of the Advanced Manufacturing Training Centre and the National Centre for Additive Manufacturing.

Our role has also increased to cover not only R&D but also Training, Advanced Manufacturing Management and Factory Design.

We now have over 700 talented employees working with us.

During this time we have helped hundreds of companies across a range of industries and over 100 of them have become members of the MTC.
