About Us

Queen Camel Medical Centre is a dispensing practice with a list size of over 6100 which dispenses to over 80% of patients. We would like to recruit a new Pharmacy Technician to join the team. We are proud of the good quality patient care that the whole practice team provides. The GP National Survey shows that 99% of patients would recommend our surgery to someone new to the area.

The post holder will work with our non-clinical prescription clerks, dispensers, and within the wider team. The role will help patients to get the best from their medicines by switching medications to agreed and approved protocols, improving repeat prescribing processes, including promotion of online ordering, minimising clinical risk and aiming to reduce wasted medicines.

The role will also include training and development of practice based prescribing clerks, dispensers, and administrators to support improved co-ordination and effective medicines management within general practice, especially with relation to processes. The post is likely to include some team leadership of our prescription clerks as part of our practice structure.

Main duties of the job

Undertake patient supporting roles to ensure effective medicines use
Day to day handling of prescription queries
Medicines reconciliation post discharge and on other transfers of care
To update and maintain accurate patient medication records on the practice clinical computer system including advice given and action taken.
Delivery of training and development to practice based prescribing clerks and dispensers
Support practice teams in streaming general prescription requests.
Support the implementation of prescribing policies, SOPs and guidance

Job Description

The Pharmacy Technician will support safe, effective, and efficient medicines use within the GP practice. Working alongside GPs, ANPs, Nurses, Dispensers and the wider multidisciplinary team, the postholder will contribute to high‑quality patient care by optimising repeat prescribing processes, improving medicines safety, and supporting long‑term condition management.

Key Responsibilities

Medicines Management

Repeat prescribing — process, reauthorise within scope, and resolve routine medication queries.
Medicines reconciliation for new patients, post‑discharge summaries, and care home residents.
Review and update medication records, ensuring accuracy and safety.
Support high‑risk drug monitoring (e.g., methotrexate, lithium, DOACs) under clinical protocols.
Identify patients suitable for medication reviews

Patient‑Facing Support

Provide medicines information to patients, ensuring understanding of dosage, timing, and safe use.
Promote self‑care, adherence, and lifestyle advice.

Clinical Safety & Quality

Assist with audits, QOF, IIF, and medicines safety improvement projects.
Support implementation of ECLIPSE, MHRA alerts, NICE guidance, and local prescribing policies.
Participate in medicines optimisation initiatives, such as reducing waste and improving cost‑effective prescribing.

Practice Operations

Maintain repeat prescribing SOPs, protocols and contribute to workflow improvements.
Liaise with hospitals, and care homes to resolve medication issues.
Support vaccination campaigns (e.g., flu, COVID‑19) within scope.
Ensure compliance with CQC standards, SOPs, and information governance.
Liaise with suppliers to build good relationships and ensure standardisation of ordering of medicines.

Required Qualifications & Registration

Registration as a Pharmacy Technician (mandatory).
Completion of an approved Level 3 Pharmacy Technician qualification.

Desirable Experience

Experience in primary care, community pharmacy, or hospital pharmacy.
Knowledge of EMIS, Proscript or other GP clinical systems.
Understanding of NHS prescribing policies, formularies, and local pathways.

Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
High attention to detail and strong clinical risk awareness.

Person Specification

Experience

Essential

Knowledge of the principles of medicines optimisation
Good clinical pharmacy knowledge including terminology
Knowledge and understanding of pharmacy law and ethics and current legislation

Desirable

Relevant advanced theoretical and practical knowledge of Primary Care, General Practice and evidence-based medicine
An appreciation of the nature of primary care prescribing, concepts of rational prescribing and strategies for the improvement of prescribing

Qualifications

Essential

BTEC/NVQ level 3 or equivalent in pharmaceutical sciences
Professional registration with GPhC

Desirable

Evidence of working as a registered pharmacy technician in general practice
Postgraduate qualifications of a relevant nature. e.g. FdSc in Medicines Management/Pharmacy Services; BTEC Therapeutics

Pay: £33,239.00-£35,194.00 per year
