Full job description

The role of a 'Junior Product Designer’ is a key position within the Specialised Canvas Services Ltd T/A Felthams Team located in Witchford, Cambridgeshire.

The company provides a service in designing & manufacturing Industrial textile products to customers in many sectors including, Logistics, Audio Visual, Medical, Sales, and Heritage, among others, for clients both abroad and in the UK.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Learn to Design and develop a vast variety of textile products for multiple industries, as well as bespoke products for numerous enquiries, all which meet their technical and commercial requirements.

2. After broad training be able to apply that knowledge, to assist the sales team and work in parallel with the Production Supervisor in providing product development and pre-sales design to help attract and win orders.

3. Preparing technical drawings and CAD files for the cutting department and produce manufacturing instructions for the sewing machinists in the factory.

4. The role will involve driving innovation through the development of new products and the evolution of current products.

5. You will assist the sales team, to achieve both the best product and commercial outcomes.

The role requires a ‘Team player’ at our Witchford office integrating with the small sales, design and management team, and senior Directors and their sales and production teams based in Chesterfield at Headquarters. You will actively contribute to the day-to-day operations, producing designs conforming to briefs provided, following methods and processes as laid out in our ISO registered companies operations manuals. You will assist the Sales team and form part of the overall team liaising between yourself, Sales and the Production Supervisor, all reporting to the on-site Manager.

Basic training in textiles will be provided and immersion in the environment will build knowledge, for a person with an enquiring mind.

Primary Objective:

Product Design –To create accurate full drawing packages including cut files, manufacturing instructions, parts lists and bills of materials.

Proactive contribution – Actively seeking and recommending ways in which products could be designed or manufactured better, through the choice of materials, method of construction or other factors.

Team Player – contributing to the performance of the team through participation and knowledge, finding solutions to design and product challenges and to become a source of reference for both clients and colleagues when considering the appropriate design solution.

Major Areas of Responsibility:

You will work within the development lifecycle, covering design, development and testing ensuring the successful manufacture of functional products.
Actively contributing to the dynamic of the SCS Ltd T/A Felthams Sales Team providing timely support and assistance.
Apply technical knowledge to help resolve technical & basic product design conundrums.
Plan and prioritise personal design activities.
Assist in the costing and time elements of production including design time and BOM creation
Record, analyse, report, and administer per systems and requirements.
Provide innovation and a desire to expand and develop products according to the market.
Asist in the delivery of training to new designers.
Perform against several measures of performance (KPI’s) and report weekly to the team and senior management on these.
Attend meetings with clients and sales representatives.

Experience

Essential

A Draughting or Craft Design Technology Qualification at GCSE PASS level would be expected
Strong Maths skills especially Loci and Geometry
Very Good 3D Visualisation
Prior experience, even in unrelated fields of Teamwork and successful project completion
Experience working in a fast-paced environment

Desirable

Experience in a related sector or business.
Experience of designing products in textiles or other flexible materials i.e. paper crafting.
Experience in a comparable technical role would be advantageous
Manual templating experience.
Sewing experience – (industrial or otherwise)
Experience in creating manufacturing instructions
