Full job description

Job Overview
To manage all aspects of track maintenance, repair, and construction, ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the railway for the benefit of visitors and the preservation of Bressingham’s Railway heritage.

Key Responsibilities

Permanent Way

Regularly inspect the track infrastructure, including rails, sleepers, ballast, points, crossings, and associated drainage systems, to identify defects and ensure safety. Develop and implement preventative maintenance programs.
Lead and participate in the repair and renewal of track components, including rail replacement, sleeper replacement, ballast tamping, and point maintenance. This involves both manual labour and the operation of specialised track maintenance equipment (training provided where necessary).
Contribute to the planning and execution of track construction or expansion projects, ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and best practices.

Management

Adhere to and enforce all relevant safety regulations and procedures related to track maintenance and operations. Contribute to the development and improvement of safety protocols.
Assist in the development and management of the track maintenance budget, ensuring cost-effectiveness and efficient resource allocation.
Oversee the procurement, storage, and inventory of track materials and equipment.
Work collaboratively with other museum staff and volunteers. May be required to supervise volunteers or contractors on specific projects.
Maintain accurate records of track inspections, maintenance activities, repairs, and material usage.
Ensure all work complies with relevant legislation, including health and safety regulations, and any specific requirements for heritage railways.
To assist the Operations Manager in the training and assessing of both plant and steam machinery.

Other Duties

Perform other related duties as assigned by the General Manager to include:
To train as a First Aider and occupy that role, when required.
To train as a Fire Marshall and occupy that role, when required.
Drive trains and operate gallopers, when necessary.
Operate site vehicles, as required.
Assist wherever possible in emergency situations.
Work with colleagues and contractors across the museum to create an attractive, safe and successful organisation.
Any other duties as may be reasonably assigned by the General Manager.

Skills & Competencies

Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to communicate clearly, lead and show tact and diplomacy when necessary.
Motivated self-starter, focused on commercial success.
Flexible in responding to changing priorities.
Prioritisation and time-management skills.
Organisational skills, particular attention to details and accuracy.

Qualifications & Experience

5 GCSEs grade A-C (or equivalent) including English and Mathematics.
Proven experience in paid or unpaid work in permanent way maintenance.

Pay: £28,000.00 per year
