Role Overview
As a Registered Theatre Scrub Nurse, you will play a critical role in supporting surgical teams and ensuring procedures run safely, efficiently, and to the highest professional standards. You will be responsible for maintaining sterile fields, preparing instruments, assisting surgeons during procedures, and delivering outstanding perioperative patient care.
The role will involve supporting a variety of procedures, including:
- Facial plastic surgery
- Cosmetic surgery
- Minor and major surgical procedures
- Day-case surgical procedures
This position requires strong technical theatre skills, excellent communication, and the ability to remain calm and focused in a fast-paced clinical environment.
Key ResponsibilitiesClinical Responsibilities
- Act as the primary scrub practitioner during surgical procedures, ensuring the correct preparation and handling of surgical instruments and equipment.
- Maintain strict aseptic technique and sterile field management throughout surgical procedures.
- Prepare the operating theatre prior to surgery, ensuring all equipment, instruments, and consumables are available and functioning.
- Assist surgeons during procedures by anticipating surgical needs and passing instruments efficiently and safely.
- Participate in surgical counts in accordance with theatre safety protocols.
- Ensure compliance with infection prevention and control standards.
Patient Care
- Deliver high-quality perioperative nursing care from admission through to recovery handover.
- Monitor patient safety throughout the surgical process.
- Provide reassurance and compassionate care to patients before and after procedures.
- Work collaboratively with the multidisciplinary team to ensure excellent patient outcomes.
Theatre Safety and Governance
- Ensure compliance with NMC guidelines, hospital policies, and national healthcare regulations.
- Participate in the WHO surgical safety checklist process.
- Assist with risk management and incident reporting where necessary.
- Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation.
Team Collaboration
- Work closely with surgeons, anaesthetists, theatre practitioners, and recovery staff to ensure smooth theatre operations.
- Support junior staff, students, or new team members where appropriate.
- Participate in team briefings and debriefings to improve theatre performance and patient safety.
Professional Development
- Maintain up-to-date clinical knowledge through continuous professional development (CPD).
- Attend relevant training and development opportunities provided by the hospital.
- Contribute to a culture of clinical excellence and continuous improvement within the theatre team.
Skills and ExperienceEssential Requirements
- Registered Nurse (RN) with valid NMC registration
- Minimum 1 year hospital theatre scrub experience
- Experience working within an operating theatre environment
- Strong understanding of sterile technique and surgical procedures
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced surgical environment
- High attention to detail and strong organisational skills
Desirable Experience
- Experience in facial plastic surgery or cosmetic surgery theatres
- Previous experience in private healthcare settings
- Knowledge of advanced surgical equipment and instrumentation
- Surgical specialty exposure including ENT, plastics, and aesthetic procedures
