About the Role
We are looking for reliable and capable multi-skilled operatives to support a range of refurbishment, adaptation, retrofit and general building projects.
This role would suit someone with a good practical background in construction who is comfortable carrying out a variety of tasks rather than being limited to one trade. The successful candidate will work as part of a site team and will be expected to complete general building, preparation, making-good and finishing works to a good standard.
The role will involve working in both occupied and empty properties, as well as public sector and commercial environments, so a professional attitude and respect for customers, residents and other site users is essential.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Duties will vary depending on the project, but may include:
- General refurbishment and building works
- Strip-out, preparation and enabling works
- Basic joinery works, including skirtings, architraves, boxing-in, ironmongery and minor repairs
- Patch plastering and general making good
- Wall and floor preparation
- Basic tiling repairs and finishing works
- Painting, decorating and touch-up works
- Basic plumbing support, where competent and appropriate
- Bathroom, kitchen and adaptation support works
- Fitting fixtures, fittings, grab rails, accessories and similar items
- Assisting other trades where required
- Loading, unloading and moving materials safely
- Keeping work areas clean, tidy and safe
- Protecting residents’ homes, floors, surfaces and belongings during works
- Reporting any defects, issues, variations or health and safety concerns to the Site Manager or Project Manager
- Working from instructions, drawings, specifications and schedules of work where provided
- Completing work to a good standard and within agreed timescales
The role does not include electrical, gas or other regulated works unless the operative holds the required qualifications and has been authorised to carry out that work.
Skills and Experience Required
The ideal candidate will have:
- Previous experience working on refurbishment, maintenance, adaptation, retrofit or general building projects
- A good all-round practical skillset
- Competence in at least one core trade, with the ability to turn their hand to other general tasks
- Good attention to detail and pride in their work
- The ability to work independently when required
- The ability to work well as part of a team
- A sensible approach to health and safety
- Good communication skills with residents, clients, site managers and other trades
- A reliable and flexible attitude
- The ability to follow instructions and raise issues early
Desirable Skills
Experience in any of the following would be beneficial:
- Joinery
- Patch plastering
- Tiling
- Painting and decorating
- Basic plumbing
- Bathroom or wet room adaptations
- Kitchen refurbishments
- Social housing refurbishment
- Working in occupied properties
- Retrofit or energy efficiency works
Qualifications and Requirements
Essential:
- Full UK driving licence
- CSCS card, or willingness to obtain one
- Previous construction site experience
- Own basic hand tools preferred
Desirable:
- NVQ or trade qualification
- Asbestos awareness
- Manual handling training
- Working at height training
- First aid training
- DBS check, or willingness to complete one where required for client contracts
