Do you have a passion for outdoor learning and inspiring young people to achieve more than they thought possible?

Derwen College is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated Outdoor Learning Coordinator to lead and develop our exciting outdoor learning programme. This is a fantastic opportunity to make a meaningful difference to the lives of young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) by creating memorable experiences that build confidence, resilience, independence and life skills.

Working closely with the Sports and Leisure Lead, you will coordinate and deliver a wide range of outdoor learning opportunities, including the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, residential visits, expeditions and enrichment activities. You will also play a key role in developing and implementing the College’s Outdoor Learning Strategy, ensuring students have access to inclusive, high-quality outdoor experiences.

This is a term-time only position. Due to the nature of the role, flexibility is essential, as there will be a requirement to work occasional evenings, weekends and residential trips to support outdoor learning activities and events.

About You

We are looking for someone who:

Is passionate about outdoor education and its positive impact on young people.
Has experience leading outdoor learning, adventurous activities or expeditions.
Can confidently organise, coordinate and deliver engaging outdoor programmes.
Has excellent communication and organisational skills.
Enjoys working collaboratively as part of a supportive team.
Understands, or is willing to develop, inclusive approaches to working with young people with SEND.
Holds relevant outdoor activity, coaching or teaching qualifications (desirable).

Essential

Experience of leading and delivering outdoor education, outdoor learning or adventurous activity programmes.
Relevant National Governing Body (NGB) qualifications appropriate to the role.
Experience of planning and leading expeditions, residential visits and outdoor activity trips.
Experience of working with young people with SEND and adapting activities to meet a range of needs.
Good understanding of inclusion, positive risk-taking and person-centred practice.
Ability to motivate, engage and inspire students to participate in outdoor learning activities.
Strong organisational and administrative skills, including risk assessments, trip planning and record keeping.
Ability to coordinate and lead staff and volunteers during activities, expeditions and residential visits.
Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
Commitment to safeguarding, equality, diversity and promoting student wellbeing.

Desirable

Duke of Edinburgh Award Leader and/or Assessor accreditation.
Mountain Training, paddlesport, climbing or other relevant outdoor qualifications.
Teaching, coaching or instructional qualification.
Experience of developing new programmes, activities or partnerships.
Experience of overseas expedition or residential trip leadership.
Knowledge of preparation for adulthood outcomes for young people with SEND.
First Aid qualification relevant to outdoor activities.
Experience of contributing to quality improvement, self-assessment or strategic development.
