Role Purpose
AP Lighting is looking for a reliable, hands-on Warehouse Operative to join the team at our Chelmsford Head Office. This role is primarily warehouse-based — picking, packing, goods-in/out and stock control — with occasional delivery driving to provide cover as and when required.
You'll be a key part of keeping the warehouse running smoothly, with the flexibility to step in on the road when needed, representing AP Lighting professionally on any drops you cover.
Key Responsibilities
Warehouse duties:
- Pick, pack and prepare customer orders accurately, in line with delivery notes.
- Receive, check and put away incoming deliveries from suppliers, completing GRN (Goods Received Note) processing accurately and promptly.
- Maintain accurate stock levels and report discrepancies to the Warehouse Manager.
- Keep the warehouse clean, tidy and organised in line with health & safety standards.
- Operate warehouse equipment safely, including pallet trucks and counterbalance forklift.
- Support stocktakes and cycle counts as required.
- Work closely with sales staff and drivers to cultivate strong, professional working relationships and ensure smooth day-to-day operations.
Driving duties (occasional cover, as required):
- Load the van safely and efficiently, checking orders against paperwork before departure.
- Deliver goods to trade counters, contractors and customer sites across Essex and the wider South East region.
- Plan efficient delivery routes and keep to agreed schedules.
- Obtain proof of delivery and handle basic customer queries professionally.
- Carry out daily vehicle checks and report any faults or damage promptly.
- Keep the vehicle clean and ensure it's used in line with company policy and the Highway Code.
What We're Looking For
- Full, clean UK driving licence (held for at least 2 years) — essential, for occasional delivery cover.
- Counterbalance forklift licence — preferable but not a deal breaker.
- Previous experience in a warehouse, logistics or driving role — ideally both.
- Physically fit and comfortable with manual handling and lifting (up to 25kg).
- Good local geographical knowledge of Essex/Chelmsford area; knowledge of London and the wider South East is advantageous.
- Willingness to undertake occasional longer-distance trips in a company delivery van as required.
- Reliable, punctual and well organised.
- A positive, can-do attitude and willingness to muck in wherever needed.
- Ambitious and keen to make a positive impact — we're looking for a key player who wants to grow with the business.
- Good communication skills and a professional manner with customers.
- Good telephone manner, with the confidence to handle calls professionally.
- Comfortable using email to communicate with colleagues, suppliers and customers.
Desirable
- Forklift licence.
- Experience in the electrical, lighting or building trade distribution sector.
- Multi-drop delivery experience.
Career Progression
We're a growing business and we want this role to grow with the right person. There are genuine opportunities to progress — whether that's taking on more responsibility within the warehouse, moving into a supervisory role, or developing further into driving and logistics as the business expands.
What We Offer
- Competitive salary, reviewed annually.
- 28 days holiday including bank holidays.
- Auto. Enrolment into pension scheme.
- On-the-job training and development.
A friendly, supportive team environment within a growing distribution business
