Job Overview

We are looking for an Ophthalmic Technician to support and enhance our ophthalmology offering at Sana.

Main responsibilities are to support qualified staff in the assessment of health needs, planning, delivery and evaluation of care for a number of individuals or groups of patients, including clinical and laser risk assessment.

Location and Hours of Work

This is a full-time position (40 hours a week). Working hours will be scheduled between 7am and 8pm, and you will be required to work across both our Swansea and Bridgend branches.

Principle Duties

Communication

Ensure effective and appropriate communication with staff, patients, relatives and visitors, maintain confidentiality at all times.
Attend staff meetings and contribute constructively towards the smooth running of the clinical area.
Assist with clerical duties within the department when required.
To act, at all times, as an ambassador for the Clinic to patients and their relatives, to colleagues and to other members of the public
Act as a role model to demonstrate clinical and administrative skills to more junior staff
Maintain clear and legible patient records in accordance with both clinic and professional standards for record keeping.

Task Specific Skills

To work clinically both alongside nursing staff and independently, being able to take a clear and concise history from patients by assessing their health and well-being, completing all documentation accurately and legibly, and ensuring that all information systems are maintained. Undertaking investigations after training and competency sign off in areas such as biometry, a range of imaging techniques, pre-assessment of patients and assisting with minor operations and working within the AMD intra-vitreal injection service.
To act as a chaperone when required.
Determine optical prescription in spectacles using manual and automated focimetry.
Visual field tests – Perform the relevant visual field test for the patient within the eye department protocols on the Humphrey Field Analyzer. Be able to identify where visual fields have changed significantly, understanding unexpected variations, of which may indicate deterioration, required to give detailed explanation of tests.
To perform corneal pachymetry using a high level of skill and knowledge to avoid damage to the eye. To have an understanding of the test and when to measure again.
To develop knowledge when to perform OCT, disc photograph, corneal topography, auto refraction and learn additional technical skills as required.
Support the site to ensure all equipment is cleaned and calibrated, following local policies and procedures.
To develop an understanding and knowledge of reviewing patient referral letters including GP and Optician information to ensure additional investigations are completed.
To give clear and concise explanation and test instructions to ensure maximum patient understanding and co-operation takes place, taking into account patients who have visual impairment, hearing loss, physical or mental disabilities, learning difficulties, different age groups and non-English speaking patients
To assist the surgical team within the wards and theatres when necessary.
To care for and be responsible for the maintenance of imaging equipment used within the clinic. Be a ‘competent user’ of a variety of technical equipment (computerised and mechanical) and act as a resource person for novice users.
To assist in administration of the department, such as auditing and research

Requirements

NVQ Level 3 Health & Social Care or equivalent or preparedness to work towards.
GCSE’s (Or Equivalent) Or Functional skills at level 1 in English and Maths
