Purchasing Manager – Lead, Optimise, Deliver
Ready to take the lead in a business that values ambition as much as heritage? This is an exciting opportunity to build on the success of an already talented team, strengthening supplier partnerships and supporting the delivery of smarter, more efficient purchasing strategies.

Reporting to the Managing Director, you’ll take ownership of buying strategy and oversee day-to-day operations, leading a team of four Buyers. You’ll play a key role in enhancing supplier performance, refining processes and systems, and ensuring the business remains competitive, agile, and driven by data.

Stephenson’s is an independent family business supplying the catering trade with non-food equipment since 1868.

The Role

This is a hands-on leadership role combining operational control with strategic development (70% operational, 30% Strategic):

Purchasing Operations & Delivery (70%)

Lead end-to-end purchasing, from order management to delivery scheduling
Maintain accurate, real-time system data and clear delivery visibility
Ensure consistent supply continuity, resolving delays, shortages and quality issues proactively
Partner with Category, Caterbar buying group, Marketing and Operations to align supply with demand
Work closely with Goods-In to optimise stock flow and availability

Strategy, Suppliers & Continuous Improvement (30%)

Shape and deliver sourcing strategies aligned to commercial and brand goals
Build strong supplier partnerships, driving performance, value and service
Lead negotiations and monitor market trends to manage risk and unlock opportunity
Act as the business expert on suppliers and purchasing conditions
Improve systems, processes and ways of working
Ensure responsible sourcing, compliance and sustainability standards are met

Leadership & Team Development

Lead, coach and develop a high-performing Buying team
Set clear priorities and drive accountability
Use data to manage cost, performance and risk
Build strong internal and supplier relationships
Champion continuous improvement

What We’re Looking For

Proven leader in purchasing, procurement (essential), with strong supply chain expertise valued.(industry experience or strong product passion preferred)
Commercially sharp with a track record of delivering value
Confident negotiator with strong supplier management skills
Advanced Excel and systems skills; data-driven decision maker
Solid knowledge of purchasing and supply chain operations
Thrives in a fast-paced, priority-driven environment
Highly organised, detail-oriented, and a clear communicator
Strong awareness of sustainability, compliance, and ethical sourcing
