Research Associate in Collinear Resonance Ionization Spectroscopy for Nuclear Structure Studies

We wish to appoint an enthusiastic and motivated scientist to lead the upgrade programme at the Collinear Resonance Ionization Spectroscopy (CRIS) experiment at the ISOLDE facility, CERN. The CRIS experiment uses high-resolution laser spectroscopy to study the fundamental properties of exotic nuclei. Over the next few years, we plan to upgrade the CRIS beam line to enhance experimental sensitivity for when the ISOLDE facility restarts in 2028.

The role will have three key objectives:

To design a new front section of the beamline (integrating a new ion source, ion beam buncher/trap and electrostatic optics) in order to enhance transmission efficiency and experimental sensitivity; and
To lead the installation and commissioning of the newly designed front section of the beamline; and
To support and lead high-resolution laser spectroscopy studies to exploit these upgrades when ISOLDE restarts in 2028.

This role provides an opportunity for the successful candidate to take a lead role in enhancing the sensitivity of the CRIS experiment, allowing the measurement of exotic nuclei that, up until now, have been out of reach.

The successful candidate will possess a Ph.D. or equivalent in a relevant field of experimental physics. Knowledge and hands on experience in the operation of ion sources, low-energy ion beam transport, high voltage systems and bunching/trapping devices for ion beam production and manipulation is essential. Knowledge and experience in ion beam simulation software and computer aided design software is essential. Knowledge of laser spectroscopy studies for nuclear structure and/or precision studies for fundamental physics would be highly beneficial.

The project will be accomplished in close collaboration with the PI and other members of the CRIS collaboration at the University of Manchester and internationally. Frequent travel to CERN to install and commission the equipment, as well as supporting and leading experimental campaigns, is expected. There also may be the opportunity for an extended stay at CERN for commissioning and experimental campaigns.

This project sits within the ERC Starting Grant-funded project ESPEN (Examining the Shape of Proton Emitting Nuclei) that is led by Dr Kara Lynch, which aims to perform collinear resonance ionization spectroscopy on proton-rich nuclei beyond the proton drip line. The work will be undertaken in collaboration with the local CRIS team at the University of Manchester (Prof Kieran Flanagan, Dr Kara Lynch and a team of postgraduate researchers) and the wider international CRIS collaboration.
