We are seeking an exceptional and highly motivated Head Gardener to lead the management and continued development of a prestigious private estate. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining and enhancing a diverse range of gardens and grounds, ensuring they are presented to the highest standards throughout the year.
The estate includes formal gardens, herbaceous borders, lawns, mature trees, ornamental planting, kitchen gardens, and woodland areas. This is a hands-on role requiring both practical horticultural expertise and the ability to plan and oversee long-term garden development projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead all aspects of garden and grounds maintenance across the estate.
- Develop and implement seasonal planting schemes and annual work programmes.
- Maintain formal lawns, borders, hedges, topiary, kitchen raised beds and ornamental features.
- Monitor and manage plant health, pests, diseases, and soil conditions.
- Supervise and support gardening staff, seasonal workers, and specialist contractors.
- Manage irrigation systems, garden equipment, and horticultural supplies.
- Advise the estate owners on garden improvements, new planting initiatives, and landscape enhancements.
- Maintain accurate records of planting, maintenance schedules, and expenditure.
- Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations and safe working practices.
- Assist with the preparation of gardens for private events and special occasions when required.
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will possess a genuine passion for horticulture, exceptional attention to detail, and pride in maintaining gardens to an outstanding standard. Must be able to work as a team and in all weathers.
Essential Requirements
- Significant experience in a senior gardening role, ideally within a private estate, country house, or high-end garden setting.
- Extensive plant knowledge and strong practical horticultural skills.
- Experience in managing and motivating a small team.
- Ability to work independently and take ownership of the estate's gardens.
- Competence in the operation and maintenance of horticultural machinery and equipment.
- Excellent organisational and communication skills.
- Full UK driving licence.
Desirable Qualifications
- RHS Level 3 or higher qualification in Horticulture (or equivalent).
- PA1/PA6 pesticide application certification.
- Experience with historic gardens, estate management, or kitchen garden production.
- Chainsaw or arboricultural qualifications.
