About 30Seconds Group
We operate the UK's leading indoor digital communication network: smart displays in lift lobbies, connected to our cloud platform, letting property managers run tenant communication across every site from one dashboard. Started in Manchester, we now cover 700+ sites in 20 cities, reaching 44,000+ households, and we're growing fast.
The role
You'll be the senior Android engineer responsible for the software running on a fleet of 1,000+ devices across the UK. Unlike a phone app, our application is a long-running, kiosk-mode Android application where reliability, remote management and offline resilience are critical. A bug that crashes the app in a Manchester lift lobby is a bug a property manager calls us about.
You'll own the Android side end to end: the on-device application, OTA update strategy, device provisioning, observability, and the integrations that pull content down and push telemetry up. You'll work directly with the Technical Director and other engineers.
What you'll do
- Own the Android application from feature work and architecture through to performance and stability
- Build and maintain the systems that keep the fleet healthy: OTA updates, remote configuration, crash and uptime monitoring, alerting
- Work in kiosk / device-owner mode: full-screen lock-down, auto-recovery, watchdogs, locked-down launchers
- Make the app resilient to flaky building WiFi/4G: aggressive caching, offline playback, graceful degradation, retry strategies
- Build the content delivery pipeline: scheduling, prefetching, media playback (images, video, scrolling notices), and real-time push when something urgent needs to go out
- Help shape how the back end, the property manager web app, and the displays fit together
What we're looking for
- 5+ years of native Android development in Kotlin
- Production experience with long-running apps, kiosk mode, or digital signage
- Solid grasp of the Android lifecycle, background work, foreground services, and what actually happens to an app left running for weeks
- Experience with OTA updates, remote configuration, or fleet management at meaningful scale
- Comfort with offline-first thinking: caching, sync, conflict handling, the lot
- A track record of owning technical decisions and talking through the trade-offs you made
What we offer
- £55,000 to £70,000 salary, hybrid working from our Manchester office
- 28 days paid holiday a year (including bank holidays), pension
- An Android role focused entirely on signage and fleet management, not a general app role
- Real ownership: you'll make architectural calls that stick, not implement someone else's design doc
- Software you can walk past and see running in buildings across the UK
