You must have the ability to work under pressure ensuring a high level of professionalism providing funeral services for bereaved families ensuring a personalised, unique and seamless funeral for all our families.
The Bereavement Service operates four locality-based crematoria providing dignified and respectful Funeral and Cremation services to the people, and families of North Yorkshire and beyond.
The Service has responsibility for a significant number of open and closed cemeteries and closed churchyards across North Yorkshire, including their maintenance and safety of memorials.
The post holder will contribute towards achieving service key performance indicators. Relevant qualifications will be required to be achieved to carry out some roles. The role is emotionally and physically demanding. If you do not already hold the required qualifications you will be supported to achieve them within a reasonable timeframe.
The post-holder will work within one of the locality teams in the service with the potential of working in other areas and tasked on a day-to-day basis by a manager in the locality in which they are based.

Main Responsibilities:
Entry-level accountabilities
Chapel Attendant – This front line role offers a dignified oversight to ensure the smooth running of Cremation services, liaising with ministers/celebrants, funeral directors, bereaved families and significant number of mourners. This is emotionally demanding work always requiring a respectful and dignified demeanour offering exception customer service.
Cremator Technician - The respectful and dignified cremation of a deceased person in line with statutory legislation ensuring full tracing of the deceased, removal of recyclable metals and adhering to risk management protocols, this is a technical role where it is essential to be qualified to undertake this part of the post, full training will be given.
Memorial Safety - Contribute to the Services’ memorial safety programme within the Council’s cemeteries and closed churchyards for which the council has responsibility to maintain. This is physically demanding work, and will see you working outside in all weathers.
Top Level Accountability
Funeral Arrangements – ensuring that funeral services are booked in correctly, in a timely manner and all legal paperwork regarding the deceased is processed according to statutory legislation and guidance. This can be complex work which has to be completed under tight deadlines to absolute accuracy.
Cemetery Officer - contribute to the accuracy of all cemetery records, assisting relatives in locating the deceased, purchasing and renewal of memorials. This role does require understanding and compliance with cemetery law and again is complex work with a need of accuracy under tight deadlines.
Burial Attendant – dignified oversight to ensure the smooth running of burials or scattering/strewing of cremated remains including liaison with ministers/celebrants, funeral directors, bereaved families, mourners and Bereavement Technicians. This is emotionally demanding but rewarding work which always requires a respectful and dignified demeanour.
Ensuring compliance with all legal requirements of the service delivery is of absolute importance, as is attention to detail and time management skills.
Some weekend working and irregular hours may be required to meet operational demand. Full training will be provided for the right candidate.
