Role Overview
We are looking for an enthusiastic and skilled Second Climber to join our arboricultural operations team. Working under the direction of the Climbing Arborist / Team Leader, the Second Climber will assist with and independently carry out a variety of aerial tree surgery operations, ground-based tasks, and general site duties.

Key Responsibilities
Climbing & Aerial Operations
- Assist the lead climber with aerial tree surgery operations including crown reductions, crown lifts, dead-wooding, and formative pruning
- Carry out independent climbing tasks as directed and in accordance with BS 3998
- Perform aerial rescue procedures and act as the designated rescue climber when required
- Assist with rigging operations, including operating as the ground-based rigger/banksman
- Set up and manage ropes, rigging lines, and lowering systems safely and efficiently
- Operate chainsaws at ground level for processing timber and brushwood as required
Ground Support & Site Duties
- Assist with site setup and take-down, including traffic management, signage, and exclusion zones
- Operate woodchippers, stump grinders, and other arboricultural machinery as instructed and qualified
- Clear and process arising material efficiently, ensuring sites are left clean and tidy
- Assist with loading and unloading of vehicles and equipment
- Support the team leader with completing job sheets, waste transfer notes, and other paperwork
- Carry out general maintenance and cleaning of tools, machinery, and vehicles
Health, Safety & Compliance
- Work in full compliance with company Health & Safety policies and current legislation at all times
- Carry out daily pre-use checks on climbing equipment, chainsaws, and other machinery
- Wear and maintain all required PPE and report any defects or shortages immediately
- Participate in toolbox talks, briefings, and Dynamic Risk Assessments (DRA) as directed by the Team Leader
- Report near-misses, incidents, and hazards to the Team Leader promptly
- Maintain a tidy and safe working environment on site at all times
Person Specification
Essential Qualifications & Certifications
- NPTC / City & Guilds Level 2 or above in Arboriculture – Climbing & Aerial Rescue
- NPTC CS30 & CS31 – Chainsaw Maintenance and Cross-Cutting
- NPTC CS38 – Felling & Processing Trees up to 380mm (CS39 desirable)
- Current Aerial Rescue qualification
- First Aid at Work certificate (or willingness to obtain)
- Full UK driving licence
Desirable Qualifications
- NPTC CS41 – Using a Chainsaw from a Rope and Harness
- NPTC Stump Grinding certificate
- LANTRA Awards Chipper Operator
- IPAF MEWP Operator licence (3a/3b)
Skills & Experience
- Minimum 1–2 years’ practical experience in professional tree surgery or arboricultural operations
- Competent and confident aerial climber with good technical rope skills
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team and take direction from the Team Leader
- Good understanding of safe working practices and relevant legislation
- Physical fitness and the ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Willingness to learn and develop new skills on the job
- Good communication skills and a positive, can-do attitude
- Ability to represent the company professionally when dealing with clients on site

Working Hours
Standard working hours are Monday to Friday, 07:00–16:00, with some flexibility required to meet operational demands. Overtime may be available.
