If so, we are seeking a Learning Support Assistant with the experience of working within an Early Years setting or a Primary School setting. A large proportion of the role will involve working on a 1:1 basis to support a young child with autism and without functional spoken language. The child experiences additional difficulties with focus and attention and expressive and receptive language skills, as well as difficulties with emotional understanding and regulation.
We are seeking a candidate who understands varying SEND needs and who is able to adapt learning to meet the needs of children. The candidate will work within a well-established school team.
We are seeking a candidate who has experience working with children with additional needs (whether personally or professionally).
The successful candidate needs to be comfortable working 1:1 within the classroom with the child and at times following a more personalised curriculum utilising other areas of school such as the nurture room, communication base and woodlands area.
The essential skills and qualities required for this role are:
- Ability to support children within the classroom environment and in 1:1 or small group intervention
- Ability to be flexible and adaptable and positive and nurturing in approach
- Ability to build rapport and strong relationships with children
- Ability to take own initiative, adapting learning in the moment, follow pupil interests and breaking learning down to small steps, and work within a team taking direction from the class teacher
- A knowledge and understanding of how children learn and early childhood development
- A knowledge and understanding of Autism and Communication and Interaction
- Good oral and written English language skills
The desirable skills and qualities require for this role are:
- Knowledge and Understanding of Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS)
- Trained in Speech and language therapy or language intervention
- Level 2 or 3 teaching assistant qualification or equivalent
- Trained in delivering Read Write Inc (phonics)

Full time equivilent salary starting from £25,000 per annum. Pro-rata rates apply for part time/term-time staff. Based on Devon County Council Pay Grade C.
