Working for the City of Doncaster Council as a Youth Justice Officer could be perfect for you. This is a unique opportunity to be part of a team that is committed to relationship-based practice and trauma-informed approaches, working with some of the most vulnerable young people in our community to make lasting, positive change.
We are looking for someone with a proven track record within Youth Justice, or related fields, with experience of undertaking holistic assessments and creating bespoke plans for young people and their families. Candidates will have a sound understanding of risk assessment, case management and ensure the victim’s voice informs their approach.
You’ll be confident working in fast-paced, complex environments. You will be familiar with the Child First agenda and implement this within your day-to-day practice. You will be willing to work flexibly including being part of a weekend rota and working evenings as the job requires.
You will assess young people on a variety of Out of Court Disposals (OOCD) and Court Orders. To make Judgements of Risk across three domains, devise associated plans that cover management of risk and intervention for those from low to very high risk of harm. To work with young people using a trauma informed/relational/desistance-based approach, liaising with other professionals internally and externally to support young people to be offence-free and reach their full potential. To attend Court as required and to write Pre-Sentence Reports to aid sentencers.
Duties and Responsibilities
Core responsibilities and duties will include:

To carry out good quality assessments of young people who have committed offences, using the prescribed assessment tools and within required timescales.
- To prepare reports on young people to a high standard and in accordance with the local definitions of National Standards for Youth Justice for Courts and Out of Court panels to help sentencers make decisions on outcomes.
- To make judgements of safety to others (serious harm), reoffending and safety and wellbeing for young people and devise appropriate Risk Management Plans, following relevant procedures and guidance in order to protect and support young people, the wider public and reduce reoffending.
- To adhere to the Engagement, Compliance and Enforcement procedures, in accordance with local Standards to ensure young people adhere to statutory orders.
- To work in a way that will enable young people’s participation in all aspects of service delivery and ensure that their Lived Experiences are central – taking a position of understanding what has happened to them, rather than “what is wrong” with them in order to provide appropriate intervention.
- To ensure the victim’s voice is considered as part of all assessments and to work closely with the service’s victim leads. To support with safety planning for victims to ensures they are protected from revictimisation.
- To be part of a rota that covers all Youth Court appearances, including weekends and bank holidays.
- To record all interactions relating to young people on the Youth Justice Team database to a high standard and within appropriate timescales to ensure accurate record keeping.
- To undertake home visits and calls to young people on evenings, weekends and bank holidays as determined by the Risk levels of those young people.
- To take responsibility for continuing own professional learning and development.
