Title of Post: Gypsy/Traveller Mental Health and Wellbeing Development Worker

Employer: MECOPP (Minority Ethnic Carers of People Project)

Work Location: Flexible

Office Location: MECOPP, Norton Park Business Centre, 57 Albion Road, Edinburgh

Hours: 25 hours per week

Contract: Funded until 31st March 2027

Salary Scale: £19,921

Introduction

MECOPP is Scotland’s leading Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) carers’ organisation providing a variety of care and support services to carers from BME and other marginalised communities.

The postholder will join an established Community Health Team – ‘Community Health Matters’ – designed to improve health outcomes and reduce health inequalities amongst Scotland’s Gypsy/Traveller community. The Community Health Team is part of a wider programme of work supporting the Gypsy/Traveller community which includes carer support, support for the cared for person, financial resilience, food insecurity, community-based arts and women’s and men’s development work.

The postholder will:

Raise awareness of mental health and wellbeing within the community using a variety of approaches to include community outreach, information campaigns including social media and developing mental health and wellbeing ‘ambassadors’;
Develop a range of accessible resources including dedicated web pages on the MECOPP website in partnership with community members;
Provide mental health and wellbeing awareness raising sessions aimed at different population groups within the community, eg. carers, young people, women, men and older people;
Build community capacity and resilience by supporting the participation of community members in accredited mental health training such as Mental Health First Aid and Safe Talk;
Raise awareness of the specific issues in relation to mental health and wellbeing experienced by the community with planners, policy makers and service providers at local and national level; and,
Support community engagement and participation with policy makers, planners and service providers.

· (*particular focus on intergeneration project working)

We anticipate that travel may be required so the location of the post is flexible although some attendance at the office will be required. Key areas of focus for this work will include Lanarkshire, Ayrshire, and Arran.

Delivery of all tasks and activities will be commensurate with the number of hours secured for the post.

Specific Tasks and Activities

1. To actively promote the position and its remit to the community.

2. To identify the mental health, wellbeing and resilience needs of the community and develop awareness raising, information and educational opportunities in response to these.

3. To undertake regular community engagement activities to identify any emergent needs and respond as required.

4. To identify, ‘train’ and support a pool of mental health and wellbeing ‘ambassadors’ amongst community members. (alongside designated colleagues)

5. To create a dedicated resource on the MECOPP website for hosting relevant and appropriate mental health and wellbeing resources both produced by MECOPP and externally.

6. To support community members to participate in accredited mental health and wellbeing training opportunities.

7. To support access to existing mental health and wellbeing resources/services as and when appropriate.

8. To work in partnership with existing members of the MECOPP Gypsy/Traveller team to support individuals with mental health and wellbeing needs within the geographic areas identified.

9. To participate in relevant national policy and planning forums to raise awareness of the mental health and wellbeing needs of the community.

10. To support the participation of community members in the relevant policy and planning forums.

11. To participate in opportunities to share project learning, eg. workshops, learning/information sessions for practitioners.

12. To design and implement accessible evaluation processes to ensure all aspects of work are informed and influenced by community feedback.

13. To keep accurate records of project activity and produce quarterly reports for the MECOPP Gypsy/Traveller Programme Lead, Community Health Project Manager, funders and other stakeholders.

14. To support the Gypsy/Traveller Programme Manager in the submission of annual reports to funders, partners, the Scottish Government and other stakeholders.

15. To self administer all areas of work.

Management and Accountability

1. To produce regular reports of work for the Gypsy/Traveller Programme Manager, Community Health Project Manager, MECOPP Chief Executive and the MECOPP Board of Directors.

2. To participate in regular support and supervision sessions with the Gypsy/Traveller Community Health Manager.

3. To participate in team meetings and other internal meetings as required.

4. To attend any training as required.
