We are the largest independent supplier of skin-packed and bulk fish to large multiples, wholesalers and the food service sector. Copernus is a 220+ strong family run business, who recognize our staff are pivotal to our continued success.
ROLE PURPOSE:
- To support the Fresh and Frozen Manager in the effective day-to-day running of the function, ensuring the efficient movement of raw materials and finished goods
- To supervise despatch operations, maintaining high standards of safety, accuracy, and service
- To act as a key link between the department, the wider operational team, and logistics providers, ensuring timely and cost-effective distribution
- To contribute to continuous improvement and staff development within the department
ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Act as deputy to the Fresh and Frozen Manager, providing cover and support as required
- Supervise and coordinate the despatch team, ensuring workload is effectively managed and deadlines are met
- Support staff development, including training, performance management, and coaching
- Oversee raw material intake, ensuring accurate receipt, checks, and documentation
- Manage finished goods despatch, ensuring orders are picked, loaded, and dispatched on time and in full
- Book transport slots and coordinate schedules with hauliers and transport providers
- Maintain clear and effective communication with hauliers regarding delivery and collection requirements
- Oversee freezer movements, ensuring stock is managed efficiently and safely
- Ensure all associated paperwork and system transactions are completed accurately and on time
- Monitor operational performance and address issues to maintain service levels
- Ensure compliance with health & safety, quality, and company procedures
SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE:
- Strong understanding of warehouse and despatch operations
- Experience in supervising teams within a logistics or manufacturing environment
- Knowledge of stock control processes and inventory management
- Familiarity with transport coordination and haulier communication
- Good IT skills, including warehouse systems and Microsoft Office
- Strong organisational and planning skills with the ability to prioritise tasks
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
- Ability to problem-solve and make decisions in a fast-paced environment
- Good understanding of health & safety requirements within a warehouse setting
- Attention to detail and commitment to accuracy
DESIRABLE:
- Previous experience in a supervisory or team leader role within despatch or logistics
- Experience working in a temperature-controlled or food production environment
- Knowledge of transport regulations and compliance requirements
- Experience using ERP or warehouse management systems (WMS)
- Exposure to continuous improvement or lean practices
- Forklift or other MHE (Material Handling Equipment) licences
- Experience working with KPIs and performance management tools
Shift patterns in the despatch team are 4 days on, 4 days off. Positions are available on 6AM-6PM schedule.
