Role Title: Castle and Visitor Coordinator
Reports To: Heritage Manager
Location: Powderham, Devon
Terms : 24 Hours / Fixed Term Until 31st October 2026 with opportunity to review and extend
Days: Monday - Wednesday 9:00am - 3.30pm and Sundays 9:00am - 3.30pm
Annual Leave: 30 days per year pro rata depending on working pattern
Pension: Eligible to join the company pension scheme
Salary : £26,000 pro rata (£16,640)
Purpose
The Castle and Visitor Coordinator plays a key operational role in the daily delivery of the visitor experience within the Castle and wider visitor operation.
Reporting to the Heritage Manager, the role supports the smooth day-to-day running of the Castle during public opening, ensuring the house and visitor areas are consistently presented to a high standard and are fully ready to welcome visitors each morning.
The role combines frontline visitor engagement with operational coordination and team leadership responsibilities. This role will take ownership of the daily visitor experience within the Castle, supporting and supervising the Guides and Visitor Services team while ensuring a welcoming, safe, well-organised and high-quality experience for all visitors.
This is a hands-on role requiring visibility across the site, flexibility, initiative and a proactive approach to problem-solving and team support. The role forms part of the daily operational support structure for the Castle, contributing to routine visitor operations and team coordination.
Key Responsibilities
Visitor Experience and Frontline Leadership
The Attraction Assistant supports the delivery of visitor services across the site.
- Ensure the Castle and visitor-facing areas are fully prepared and public-ready each morning
- Deliver guided tours and visitor talks where required
- Promote a positive, inclusive and engaging visitor experience at all times
- Act as a visible and supportive presence across the Castle during opening hours
- Take ownership of the day-to-day visitor experience within the Castle
Operational Coordination and Duty Management
The Castle and Visitor Coordinator supports the smooth and effective daily operation of the Castle and visitor services team.
- Coordinate day-to-day operational activity within the Castle during public opening
- Ensure the Castle and visitor areas are ready for visitors at the start of each day and maintained throughout opening hours
- Provide practical operational support across visitor-facing areas to ensure smooth daily operations
- Contribute to routine operational procedures, including opening and closing activities, team communications and visitor support
- Support colleagues through daily team coordination, including break cover and responding to short-term operational needs
- Respond calmly and effectively to operational issues as they arise
- Ensure public areas remain safe, tidy and well-presented throughout the day
- Assist with the set-up and preparation of tours, group visits and activities
- Work flexibly to support the wider operational needs of the estate and visitor operation
Team Development and Support
- Support the line management of Guides and Visitor Services team
- Produce rotas and daily team coordination
- Support training, guidance and development of frontline teams
- Foster a positive, collaborative and professional team culture
- Ensure teams feel supported, informed and confident in daily operations
- Work closely with the Volunteer Coordinator to support volunteers within the Castle operation
- Stand in and provide operational support during periods of sickness or absence
- Lead by example through a hands-on and proactive approach

- Experience in a customer-facing role
- Experience supervising or coordinating teams
