The Acute Consultants contribute to the care of patients within the Acute Medical Unit (AMU) and Emergency Department (ED) footprint e.g. AEC, Trolley Bay, AMU Assessment, AMU Short Stay, post-take, day-take and reviewing patients in ED awaiting medical beds. Each individual Consultant’s timetable will vary weekly to ensure all clinical areas within the Acute Medicine footprint have senior cover. This approach ensures continuity of patient care in the week, continuity of consultants for our resident doctors and ward nursing teams as well as provides variety and flexibility of weekly working for the consultants.
We currently have six substantive Acute Physicians and two long term Locums, with subspecialty interests in Respiratory Medicine, Nephrology, General Practice and Clinical Pharmacology. There is an accredited FAMUS trainer within the consultant cohort. The Acute Consultants work closely with a specialist frailty team and the ED department.
Provide an Acute Consultant service for patients at Wrexham Maelor Hospital.
Support the development of ambulatory care pathways, specialty in-reach and other service improvements.
Contribute to the General Medicine (GIM) out of hours rota.
Participate in departmental meetings, audit and clinical governance activity (including appraisal and revalidation).
To work as part of the multi-disciplinary team and in close liaison with Consultant colleagues in the Medical Directorate and other directorates as needed.
Develop strong working links with Primary Care to reduce unnecessary admissions
Support undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes.
Be responsible for providing senior leadership and management working alongside our trainees and other healthcare professionals
Work between the front door, Ambulatory Emergency Care (AEC), Trolley Bay, Assessment Ward / Short Stay Ward providing clinical care for our acutely unwell patients.
Provide training and supervision for our staff and support service development
