Job Title: Private Phonics Tutor for 5-Year-Old — Qualified Primary Teacher (Birmingham City Centre)
Job Type: Part-time, permanent (long-term)
Pay: £37.00 per hour
Hours: 3 hours per week (flexible scheduling — weekday afternoons/evenings or weekends, to be agreed)
Location: Birmingham city centre — in-person only. Sessions will take place at our apartment or a nearby café, whichever the tutor prefers.
About the role
We are looking for a warm, patient, and experienced primary school teacher to tutor our 5-year-old son in phonics and early reading. He has just completed Reception at an international school in Malaysia. His English is good, but as English is not his first language at home, his phonics and reading are not yet at the same level as UK-schooled children of his age. We want to close that gap ahead of Year 1.
This is a long-term engagement — young children need time to build trust and rapport with a tutor, so we are specifically seeking someone who can commit for at least 12 months, ideally longer. We are not looking for short-term or holiday-only cover.
Responsibilities
Deliver structured, engaging one-to-one phonics sessions (3 hours per week, typically split across 2–3 sessions) using a systematic synthetic phonics approach (e.g. Little Wandle, Read Write Inc., or similar). Assess his current level, plan a progression tailored to him, and track his progress against UK Reception/Year 1 expectations. Keep sessions fun and age-appropriate — he is five, and we want him to enjoy reading. Provide brief, regular feedback to parents and suggest simple activities we can do with him between sessions.
Requirements
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent UK teaching qualification
- Substantial experience teaching EYFS/KS1, particularly Reception and Year 1
- Strong, demonstrable expertise in teaching phonics and early literacy
- Experience supporting children with English as an additional language (EAL) is a plus
- Enhanced DBS check (or willingness to obtain one before starting)
- Based in Birmingham or the West Midlands, able to travel to Birmingham city centre
- Able to commit long-term to a consistent weekly schedule
Desirable
- Current or previous experience teaching at an independent, prep, or other high-performing local school
- Experience as a private tutor for early years children
