We are seeking experienced professionals to work as Specialist Mentors to provide one to one support for students with Mental Health Conditions (including but not limited to Depression, Anxiety, Bi-Polar, PTSD) and/or Autism.

The post holder will support students to identify any barriers to learning due to the impact of a disability and to develop study strategies to aid progression towards independent learning and self-management. This may include developing strategies around understanding the academic requirements of Higher Education; goal setting; time and workload management; preparation for written practical or oral assessments; support around researching, structuring, writing and reviewing assignments, managing a fluctuating impact of a disability on study etc.

The post holder will be supporting a range of learners such as undergraduates, postgraduates and apprentices. The work involves undertaking duties in line with funding through the Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA). This requires staff to have membership of a specific professional body and/or to hold specific qualifications. The details can be found on the Department for Education mandatory qualifications and professional memberships document from page 8. Only applicants who satisfy the professional body membership and/or mandatory qualifications for Specialist Mentor – Mental Health and/or Autistic Spectrum Conditions will be invited to interview.

This role is paid on an hourly basis, starting at £26.16. This includes a planning and preparation enhancement. In addition, you will receive an annual leave enhancement accrued for hours of student support delivered. This is then paid to staff three times per year at the start of vacation periods (December, April and August).

Successful candidates will be employed on a casual contract basis and will join the pool of staff on the Learning Support Team. Post holders are invited to pass on their availability for work or to indicate the number of students they can support. The University will endeavour to link the mentor with students to fill the availability, and mentors will be paid for the sessions they deliver. The work falls mainly during university term time.

We are particularly keen to recruit staff who can offer both online and in person one to one sessions.
