About the role
Berry & Escott is looking for an experienced Purchasing Manager to lead and improve our purchasing function.
This is a hands-on role for someone who can manage the day-to-day buying activity while also improving supplier performance, purchasing processes, stock discipline and commercial control across the business.
The successful candidate will take ownership of purchasing operations, develop stronger supplier relationships, support internal departments, and help ensure materials and services are sourced cost effectively, on time, and to the required quality standard.
This role would suit someone with solid purchasing experience in an engineering, manufacturing or industrial environment who is confident making decisions, challenging poor supplier performance, and driving practical improvement.
Key responsibilities
- Lead the purchasing function and manage daily procurement activity
- Source materials, consumables, plant and subcontract services in line with business requirements
- Negotiate pricing, lead times, supply agreements and commercial terms
- Build and manage supplier relationships to improve cost, quality and delivery performance
- Monitor stock levels and purchasing patterns to support better planning and control
- Work closely with operations, production, estimating and accounts to ensure requirements are understood and delivered
- Review and improve purchasing procedures, systems and reporting
- Support cost reduction, supplier consolidation and general efficiency improvements
- Help ensure purchase orders, supplier records and procurement data are accurate and well managed
- Provide leadership and structure within the purchasing department
What we are looking for
Essential
- Proven experience in a purchasing or procurement role at senior buyer or manager level
- Strong negotiation and supplier management skills
- Experience working in a manufacturing, engineering or industrial environment
- Good commercial awareness and cost control mindset
- Confident using ERP, MRP or purchasing systems
- Able to prioritise, organise workload and manage competing demands
- Strong communication skills and able to work effectively across departments
- Practical, hands-on approach with a focus on getting things done
Desirable
- Previous experience managing or developing a purchasing team
- Experience improving procurement processes and systems
- Knowledge of stock control and material planning
- CIPS qualification or similar professional training
