Job Purpose
To safely install, maintain, repair, and assist in the construction of multi-utility infrastructure, including water, gas, electricity, telecommunications, and associated civil works. The Multi Utilities Operative is responsible for delivering work to the required quality standards while ensuring compliance with health and safety legislation, company procedures, and client requirements.
Key Responsibilities
· Conduct excavation and reinstatement work for utility installations in accordance with project specifications and company procedures
· Install ducts, pipes, cables, chambers, service connections, and associated utility infrastructure
· Assist with the installation, repair, maintenance, and replacement of water, gas, electricity, telecommunications, and other utility services
· Operate plant, machinery, and hand tools safely and effectively, ensuring all equipment is inspected before use and defects are reported
· Read and interpret utility drawings, work instructions, and site plans to ensure works are completed accurately
· Conduct locating and safe digging practices to avoid damage to existing underground services
· Set up and maintain safe working areas, including barriers, signage, and traffic management where required
· Complete all required site documentation, including job records, permits, inspections, and risk assessments
· Maintain company vehicles, tools, and equipment in a safe, clean, and serviceable condition
· Consult professionally with supervisors, colleagues, clients, and members of the public to minimise disruption and maintain positive customer relationships
· Report any defects, hazards, incidents, near misses, or damage to underground services immediately
· Assist with emergency response work and out-of-hours callouts where required.
· Support other operational teams and undertake additional duties appropriate to the role

· Conduct a Point of Work Risk Assessment before starting any task to ensure that risks are identified, understood, and appropriately controlled
· Report hazards, follow all control measures, use equipment safely, and complete all mandatory training
· Challenge unsafe behaviours, support a positive safety culture, and ensure that your actions contribute to a safe, professional, and legally compliant working environment at all times
Qualifications and Skills
· Previous experience working within utilities, civil engineering, construction, or infrastructure environments
· Good understanding of excavation, utility installation, and reinstatement techniques
· Knowledge of safe digging practices and underground utility avoidance
· Ability to read and interpret utility drawings and work instructions
· Experience operating small plant, tools, and construction equipment
· Excellent communication and teamwork skills
· Strong work ethic with the ability to work safely under pressure
· Full UK driving licence
Preferred Attributes
· NRSWA Operative Accreditation
· Experience working across one or more utility disciplines, including water, gas, electricity, telecommunications, or drainage
· CPCS or NPORS certification for plant operation
· EUSR (Energy & Utility Skills Register) accreditation
· Confined Space certification
· Manual Handling and First Aid qualifications
· Experience working on utility framework contracts
· Ability to work flexibly, including occasional out-of-hours or emergency response work
Pay: From £17.00 per hour
