About the National Allotment Society

The National Allotment Society (NAS) is the leading organisation dedicated to promoting, protecting, and advancing the rights and benefits of allotments and community gardening across the UK. We provide support, resources, and advocacy for allotment holders and societies, helping them to grow sustainably, connect with nature, and enhance their quality of life.

Position Overview

The Treasurer of the NAS serves as a presiding officer of the Society and plays a critical leadership role in safeguarding its financial integrity and sustainability. This position is responsible for maintaining a comprehensive overview of the organization’s affairs, ensuring its ongoing financial viability, and upholding sound fiscal governance. The Treasurer oversees the development and monitoring of financial strategies, ensures accurate and transparent financial reporting, and confirms that appropriate financial records, controls, and procedures are consistently maintained in accordance with best practices and regulatory requirements.

General responsibilities

· To ensure that the organisation complies with its governing document, company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations.

· To ensure that the organisation pursues its objectives as defined in its governing document.

· To ensure the organisation applies its resources exclusively in pursuance of its objects.

· To contribute actively to the Management Committee’s role in giving firm strategic direction to the organisation, setting overall policy, defining goals and setting targets and evaluating performance against agreed targets.

· To safeguard the good name and values of the organisation.

· To ensure the financial stability of the organisation.

· To protect and manage the assets of the organisation and to ensure the proper investment of funds.

· Overseeing, approving and presenting budgets, accounts and financial statements.

· The presentation of financial reports to the Management Committee.

· Making a formal presentation of the accounts at the annual general meeting and drawing attention to important points in a coherent and easily understandable way.

In addition to the statutory duties, the Treasurer should bring relevant skills, knowledge and experience to help the Management Committee make sound decisions.

· Willingness to speak their mind

· Understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of their role

· Ability to work effectively as a member of a team

· Nolan’s seven principles of public life: selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty and leadership

· Financial qualifications and experience appropriate to the role (professional qualification desirable but not essential)

· Some experience of an organisation’s finance, fundraising and pension schemes would be desirable however, not essential

· The skills to analyse proposals and examine their financial consequences

· Confidence to provide constructive financial challenge where necessary
