The Role
This role will provide essential support for Transport for Wales (TfW)'s legal needs, advising across all areas of law (excluding property law), with an emphasis on commercial law and will include managing any external legal resource required to support such matters.
Role responsibilities
- Support the Head of Legal and Insurance on larger, complex matters through co-ordinating external legal support and working independently whilst handling a varied casework of legal matters (focusing on commercial law matters but also covering other areas of law, such as litigation, procurement; construction; environmental; planning; health and safety; public and regulatory law) to ensure the business is appropriately advised at all times and risks are minimised/mitigated.
- Support the business to achieve its strategic priorities by acting as a strategic business partner and working collaboratively with colleagues across the business, including participating in cross-functional project teams, in order to deliver those aims.
- Support managers and directors with risk identification and mitigation as necessary by providing guidance and advice, acting as a subject matter expert to ensure TfW and its subsidiaries are well informed of risks.
- Offer legal training to internal and external stakeholders through the delivery of workshops and seminars in order to build legal awareness and knowledge within the business.
- Instruct and build relationships with third party legal advisors in support of service quality and contract management through regular contact, both structured (review meetings, etc) and informal to ensure consistently high service delivery.
- Develop a deep understanding of our statutory limitations, organisational strategies and commercial drivers by continual engagement with internal and external stakeholders and organisations to ensure up to date knowledge.
- Advise TfW on legal matters in the context of their statutory frameworks and interests through providing fully considered advice and recommendations to ensure delivery of TfW needs and wants.
- Deputise for the Head of Legal and Insurance in periods of absence and perform other duties when required to ensure the needs of the organisation are met and risk to the business is minimised.
- Act as first and primary contact for stakeholders on a day-to-day basis by providing them with commercially focused legal advice to ensure risk to the business is minimised and information is accurate and consistent
- Maintain matters in good organisational shape and in accordance with quality and service levels to be agreed according to business needs.
Who we're looking for
- A Solicitor or Chartered Legal Executive or possess significant equivalent experience as a Legal Professional with demonstrable post qualification experience in commercial law in addition to in a number of other legal areas e.g. litigation, procurement, construction, environmental, health and safety or planning.
- Both experienced and confident in making independent decisions whilst managing a caseload with minimal supervision, whilst providing high quality service in a busy environment.
- Experience of analysing and applying legal principles and facts to derive technically sound advice and commercial strategies for complex matters.
- Ability to problem solve and interrogate the law and factual data and information to identify the root cause(s) of problems, demonstrated through previous experience.
- Experience of collating information to develop insights and approaches to answer business questions.
- Proven experience of engaging with and influencing multiple stakeholders across different business levels from Executive level to frontline staff.
- Experience of providing support and advice in a professional setting, proactive with identifying issues and diagnosing solutions for said issues.
