Full job description

We have an exciting opportunity for a Permanent Highway Maintenance Operative (HMO) to join our dynamic Area 7 team.

The standard hours of work are 45 hours per week, working a rotating shift pattern of days and nights, typically one week of day shifts followed by one week

of night shifts. Day shifts are 8 hours and night shifts are 10 hours.

What You'll Do

As a Highway Maintenance Operative, you will play a key role in maintaining and improving the strategic road network by delivering a variety of highways maintenance activities safely and efficiently.

Your responsibilities will include:

Maintaining high technical standards and delivering effective solutions.
Attending project briefings as required.
Ensuring compliance with all relevant health and safety legislation and specifications.
Managing and mentoring apprentices and operatives, coordinating work activities where required.
Taking responsibility for the security of vehicles, plant, equipment, and materials under your control.
Planning work activities and estimating vehicle, plant, and material requirements.
Carrying out a range of highways maintenance activities, including:
- Vehicle Restraint Systems (VRS)
- Drainage works
- Kerbing
- Fencing
- Walling
- Road sweeping
- Road signing
- Patching repairs
- Traffic management
- Soft estate maintenance
Driving and operating vehicles and plant equipment, including carrying out routine inspections, basic maintenance checks, and cleaning. A valid HGV licence is desirable.
Completing records, reports, and required documentation accurately.
Communicating effectively with colleagues, subcontractors, emergency services, police, clients, customers, and members of the public.
Reporting health and safety concerns, team issues, or performance concerns to the Supervisor.

What You'll Bring

Essential

Full UK Driving Licence.
HGV Class 2 Licence.
Experience working as a Highway Maintenance Operative or Ganger.
Experience managing or leading a team.
Experience delivering emergency response and winter maintenance services.
Experience working with Chapter 8 and Traffic Management on high-speed roads.
Personal Highway Safety Certificate (PHSC).
SSSTS or SMSTS qualification.

Desirable

CSCS card.
Experience across a broad range of highways maintenance disciplines.
