We are seeking a passionate and motivated individual to join our Adult Sensory Team as a Rehabilitation Officer (Visual Impairment).
This is an exciting opportunity to support adults with visual impairment and/or dual sensory loss to live independently, safely, and with an enhanced quality of life. The role is fundamental in promoting independence, choice, and inclusion, ensuring people remain connected to their communities and live meaningful lives.
About the Team
The Adult Sensory Team is based at the Martin Wells Centre in Edlington, with the Adult South Locality Team. The team is supported by an Advanced Practitioner and Team Leader and works collaboratively across the city.

- Voluntary sector organisations
- Children’s and Young People’s Sensory Services (supporting transition into adulthood)
Key Responsibilities
As a Rehabilitation Officer, you will:
-
Undertake specialist assessments for adults registered as severely sight impaired (blind) or sight impaired (partially sighted)
- Develop, implement, and review rehabilitation support plans
- Promote independence, safety, and wellbeing
- Teach:
- Orientation and mobility (indoor and outdoor, including long cane training)
- Daily living skills (e.g. personal care, cooking, home management)
- Independent travel skills
- Assess individuals’ eligibility for specialist aids and equipment
- Adapt household equipment (such as cookers and washing machines) using tactile markings, and provide guidance for safe use
- Support individuals through the visual impairment registration process, where certification has been provided by an Ophthalmologist
- Provide information and advice on benefits and entitlements available to people with visual impairment
- Work autonomously to manage a complex caseload
- Carry out Care Act assessments (2014) and apply the Mental Capacity Act (2005)
- Provide professional advice, guidance, and consultancy to colleagues and partner agencies
- Undertake duty responsibilities on a rota basis
- Contribute to safeguarding and multi-disciplinary working.
Specialist Skills and Practice
The role requires strong skills in delivering rehabilitation interventions, including:

Mobility and Orientation: Teaching safe navigation, route planning, and how to identify and manage hazards in both indoor and outdoor environments
- Daily Living Skills: Supporting individuals to adapt to cooking, cleaning, and managing personal care while living with little or no vision
- Supporting individuals to effectively use assistive technology, including magnifiers, screen readers, and braille
The successful candidate will be expected to have completed or be nearing completion of a recognised qualification, such as a Degree, Diploma, or Distance Learning course in Rehabilitation Work (Visual Impairment).
Additional Responsibilities

Support and mentor a trainee/apprentice Rehabilitation Officer, including:
- Direct observations
- Supervision
- Working with universities
- Completing placement reports
- Deliver rehabilitation in a range of settings, including people’s homes and community environments
- Provide and demonstrate low-level equipment and assistive technologies
- Maintain strong working knowledge of emerging technologies to promote independence

Essential Skills & Experience

Qualified (or working towards qualification) Rehabilitation Officer (Visual Impairment)
- Experience supporting adults with visual impairment or dual sensory loss
- Strong knowledge of:
- Adult social care legislation (Care Act 2014, Mental Capacity Act 2005)
- Experience of:
- Lone working
- Carrying out assessments in individuals’ homes
- Developing and reviewing support plans
- Ability to work effectively within multi-disciplinary teams (MDTs)
- High standard of IT skills (training on internal systems will be provided)
