Full job description

Overview
The purpose of this role is to teach English to students with a range of abilities and challenges from year 7 to year 11 face to face and occasionally online.

We work with young people who have been severely bullied and/or experience high levels of anxiety about attending school. We provide a safe environment with clear boundaries for behaviour, and an individual full-time academic, pastoral and therapeutic programme. Once students have regained their confidence and are able to cope academically and socially, we support their return to mainstream school or college or into employment. It is important that the jobholder concurs with this aim.

Principal Accountabilities

As a member of the teaching team:

a. help design and implement a personal learning programme for each student and/or group of students through negotiation with the students concerned and discussion with colleagues;

b. maintain records of lessons, outcomes and progress for each student;

c. advise and consult with colleagues, the Coordinators and others, discussing any concerns that arise and acting on any agreed decisions;

d. contribute to whole staff assessments of students’ social and emotional progress; e. give feedback to parents and write achievement records for students as required, and attend parents’ consultations;

Proven experience in teaching English or related subjects, with a strong understanding of curriculum development.
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to motivate and engage students of varying abilities.
Experience in mentoring, behaviour management, and special education is highly desirable.
Proficiency in creative writing, proofreading, journalism, and tutoring across different subjects including maths.
Strong organisational skills to manage lesson planning, assessments, and student records efficiently.
Demonstrated ability to adapt teaching strategies for diverse learning needs.
A recognised teaching qualification or relevant educational background is preferred but not essential for internship positions. This role provides an enriching environment for educators passionate about fostering academic excellence and personal growth among students through innovative teaching methods and dedicated mentorship.

Qualifications

● Mainstream experience: proven experience teaching English in a UK mainstream secondary school setting (essential)

● Exam Expertise: strong track record of delivering successful results at GCSE level in both English Language and Literature. (essential)

● Qualified Teacher Status (essential)

● Degree in English (desirable)

● Current experience of teaching students in Key Stages 3 and 4, including National Curriculum (essential)

● Confidence to build upon students’ interests and ideas within a negotiated curriculum (essential)

●SEN Proficiency: demonstrable experience in differentiating instruction for students with diverse learning needs (essential)

Skills/Knowledge

● Ability to teach in small groups (essential)

● Strong subject knowledge (essential)

● IT skills for teaching and record keeping (essential)

● Understanding of the impact of emotional well-being upon a student’s ability to learn and vice versa (essential)

● Interest and abilities to oversee special needs provision across the school (desirable)

Key Competencies

● Manages personal priorities, pressures and workload in an efficient, calm, proactive and effective way.

● Maintains personal boundaries whilst remaining supportive of students with difficulties.

● Is able to problem solve.
