Water Hygiene Technician
Role Overview
We are seeking a reliable and motivated Water Hygiene Technician to join our growing team. This role is ideal for someone looking to build or further develop a career within the water hygiene industry, delivering high-quality compliance services across commercial and public-sector sites.
The Water Hygiene Technician is responsible for carrying out planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and routine water hygiene compliance tasks in accordance with ACOP L8 and HSG274. The role focuses on monitoring, inspection, cleaning, flushing and sampling activities to help clients maintain safe and compliant domestic water systems.
Unlike a Water Hygiene Engineer, this role does not involve plumbing remedial works, system modifications or asset installations. The successful candidate will be expected to identify and report non-conformances and compliance issues, allowing the engineering team to carry out any required remedial works.
The successful candidate will work across a portfolio of sites throughout Greater London, with a particular focus on West London, and must be able to travel efficiently within this region.
Key Responsibilities
Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM)
Carry out water hygiene monitoring and control tasks in line with HSG274 Part 2 – Table 2.1, including but not limited to:
- Temperature monitoring
- Outlet flushing
- Showerhead cleaning and descaling
- Sentinel outlet monitoring
- Cold Water Storage Tank (CWST) visual inspections
- Thermostatic Mixing Valve (TMV) temperature checks
- Accurately complete site logbooks, checklists and digital reports
Water Hygiene Services
Carry out routine water hygiene services, including:
- Cold Water Storage Tank (CWST) cleaning and disinfection (where trained)
- Domestic hot and cold water system disinfection (where trained)
- Water sampling, including temperature, microbiological and Legionella samples
- Routine inspections of domestic water systems in accordance with company procedures
Water System Compliance
Carry out routine inspections of domestic water systems and identify potential compliance issues, including:
- Identifying outlets operating outside recommended temperature parameters
- Identifying non-compliant water temperatures during routine monitoring
- Reporting infrequently used outlets requiring flushing
- Identifying damaged or deteriorated water system assets
- Reporting missing or damaged asset identification labels
- Identifying visible dead legs, redundant pipework or other water hygiene risks
- Photographing and recording observations accurately within digital reports
- Escalating all non-conformances and recommendations to the Water Hygiene Engineer or Contract Manager for review
Compliance & Safety
- Work in accordance with company procedures, client specifications and relevant legislation
- Carry out works safely in line with RAMS and site-specific requirements
- Follow ACOP L8, HSG274 and company safe systems of work
- Identify and report water hygiene non-compliances
- Liaise professionally with clients, site staff and contract managers
- Represent the company professionally at all times
Essential Requirements
- Positive attitude with a willingness to learn and develop
- Strong work ethic and commitment to delivering high standards of service
- Good understanding of health and safety and safe working practices
- Full UK driving licence
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work independently and manage workload effectively
- Good attention to detail and the ability to produce accurate reports
- Must live within a commutable distance to West London
Desirable Experience & Qualifications
- Previous experience within the water hygiene industry or a plumbing-related trade
- NVQ Level 2 in Plumbing, a completed plumbing apprenticeship, or equivalent practical plumbing experience
- Experience working as a Water Hygiene Technician, Plumbing Apprentice, Plumber's Mate or Plumbing Engineer
- Good understanding of domestic hot and cold water systems
- Knowledge of ACOP L8 and HSG274
- Legionella Awareness, City & Guilds, WMSoc or equivalent water hygiene qualifications
- Experience carrying out water hygiene monitoring, temperature checks, outlet flushing and water sampling
- Experience carrying out Cold Water Storage Tank (CWST) cleaning and disinfection
- Experience working within commercial, healthcare, education or local authority environments
- Enhanced DBS (or willingness to obtain one)
