Location: Home Tuition – Droitwich/Worcester
Competitive Hourly Rate
9 Hours Per Week (3 x 3-hour sessions)
Start Date: ASAP
Focus: Early English, Early Maths, Communication & Play-Based Learning

About the Role

Study Mind is seeking an enthusiastic, patient and experienced SEN Tutor to support a bright and engaging Year 1 student with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

This is a rewarding opportunity to deliver play-based, child-led learning that focuses on communication, confidence and independence, while helping the student continue making progress outside of school.

The successful tutor will understand that this placement is about building engagement through play, rather than traditional classroom teaching.

About the Student

Our student is a bright, curious and affectionate young learner who has many emerging academic strengths.

He has an excellent understanding of:

Letters and the alphabet
Numbers, colours and shapes
Reading simple CVC words
Mark making and early writing
Following familiar routines

He is very capable of learning but accesses education best through play, exploration and meaningful real-life experiences.

Since learning from home, he has become much more enthusiastic about writing and enjoys engaging in activities that feel natural and fun.

Your Role

You will provide engaging 1:1 home tuition, focusing on:

Early phonics and reading
Early writing and mark making
Early Maths and number development
Communication and language
Play-based learning
Social interaction
Emotional regulation
Independence and self-help skills

Sessions should be highly practical, flexible and adapted to the student's interests and regulation needs.

Student Interests

Building sessions around the student's interests will be essential.

He enjoys:

Football and ball games
Outdoor learning
Dogs
Minecraft
Soft play
Visual books
Cause-and-effect toys
Food-based rewards and motivators

He also enjoys spending time with younger children and is naturally social when he feels comfortable.

Teaching Approach

The successful tutor will:

Deliver learning through play and exploration.
Use visual supports, objects of reference and timers.
Follow a highly predictable routine.
Break learning into short, engaging activities.
Embed communication throughout every session.
Incorporate regular movement and sensory regulation breaks.
Use distraction and redirection techniques to support transitions.
Build independence through everyday activities.
Celebrate small achievements with lots of encouragement.

Learning should always feel enjoyable and pressure-free.

Understanding the Student

The student presents with Autism and benefits from adults who understand:

Sensory processing differences
Communication delays
Emotional regulation
Transition support
Child-led learning
Low-arousal approaches

He can become dysregulated if required to wait, during transitions or when routines change unexpectedly.

At times this may include:

Head banging
Throwing himself to the floor
Hitting or scratching
Becoming overwhelmed by sensory input

A calm, consistent and reassuring approach is essential.

We're Looking For Someone Who Has Experience With

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
Early Years or Key Stage 1 education
Play-based learning
Communication and language development
Sensory regulation
Early phonics and Maths
Child-led learning approaches
Supporting children with developmental delays

Experience as an Early Years Teacher, SEN Teacher, Teaching Assistant, Speech & Language Practitioner or Specialist Tutor would be highly desirable.

Essential Requirements

Experience supporting young children with Autism.
Excellent understanding of Early Years and KS1 development.
Calm, patient and nurturing approach.
Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
Ability to deliver engaging, practical learning through play.
Enhanced DBS on the Update Service (or willingness to obtain one).
Strong safeguarding knowledge.

Tuition Details

Location

Face-to-face home tuition in the Droitwich/Worcester area.

Hours

9 hours per week
Tuesday: 9:30am–12:30pm
Wednesday: 1:30pm–4:30pm
Thursday: 1:30pm–4:30pm

(Session times are fixed around the student's existing farm-based alternative provision.)
