We are pleased to invite applications for the post of Consultant Orthogeriatrician, working across the Ageing & Complex Directorate within the WTWA Medicine Care Division and NMGH Trauma & Orthopaedics Care Division. Based on Ward A5 at Wythenshawe Hospital, this post will support services within the Fracture Neck of Femur (NOF) unit in addition to our Bone Health services at the WTWA Clinical Group. MFT’s NOF service is nationally recognised for excellent outcomes and consistently low mortality rates. The successful candidate will work within a well-established multidisciplinary team within the Ageing and Complex Care Directorate, working across Wythenshawe Hospital and Trafford General Hospital.
The post offers significant opportunities for service development within the Wythenshawe Hospital NOF and Silver Trauma services at WTWA, with a special focus on Bone Health services. Successful candidates will be supported to complete the King's Fund New Consultant Leadership Programme and will benefit from mentorship within both the Ageing and Complex Health and Trauma & Orthopaedics Directorates. There are also opportunities to develop interests in education, leadership, governance, and digital innovation.
Candidates must be eligible for their own GMC registration, as MFT cannot provide GMC sponsorship for permanent appointments.
Clinical responsibilities include:
1. Seeing any unwell adult patients as requested by the orthopaedic team.
These patients are usually directly referred by the FY1 Doctors.
2. Providing advice about the medical care of patients on the ward.
3. Working with and supervising the Speciality Doctors / locum Registrars, to ensure that patients receive care to the standard required by the Best
Practice Tariff and the National Hip Fracture Database. This will include:
a) Ensuring patients are seen by an Orthogeriatrician (Consultant,
Speciality Doctor or locum Registrar) within 72 hours of admission
b) Completing the standardised falls and osteoporosis assessment
documents
c) Attending daily “board rounds” / multidisciplinary team meetings.
(Currently at 2pm Monday to Friday).
d) Working with and supervising the Specialist Nurse for Inpatient
Osteoporosis to arrange osteoporosis investigations and treatment
4. Talking to patients relatives concerning medical problems and end of life
care.
5. Communicating about patient care with other members of the
Multidisciplinary Team (including surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses, trauma
coordinators and therapists).
6. Ensuring GPs are made aware of changes to long term medication (and the reasons for the changes).
7. At present there is an outpatient clinic alternate Friday afternoons. This could be developed depending on the interests of the postholder.
