Research Project Support Officer (Public Health Collaborating Unit)

Applications are invited for the above fixed term, full-time post working in the Public Health Collaborating Unit in the School of Health Sciences at Bangor University (Wrexham Technology Park, Wrexham). The Public Health Collaborating Unit is a public health/academic collaborative funded by Public Health Wales which provides a flexible and efficient resource for rapid assessment, evaluation and policy development support to serve Public Health Wales and the wider NHS.
The post holder will provide research support for projects being undertaken by the PHCU to support the development of trauma informed practice, social connection and violence prevention. This will include an evaluation of trauma-informed training being conducted nationally in Wales and contributions to systematic literature reviews.
Duties will include supporting study development and contributing to data collection (mixed-method), management, data analysis, report and paper writing.
Candidates should be educated to a minimum of a Masters level in a health-related subject and have previous experience of working in applied public health research.
Knowledge of public health, research methods and excellent written communication skills are essential. The successful applicant is expected to be proficient in undertaking qualitative data collection methods and using research related software for quantitative analysis.
The successful candidate will be expected to commence as soon as possible and the post is available until 31st March 2027.
This role will be located on campus at Wrexham. Through our Dynamic Working framework, there will also be the option to spend some time working remotely (although remaining in the UK) to support work life balance, which will be discussed further with candidates at interview.

Public Health Wales is the national public health agency in Wales and exists to protect and improve health and wellbeing and reduce health inequalities for people in Wales and beyond. Recognising its national and international role, expertise and achievements, the World Health Organization (WHO) designated the Policy and International Health Directorate at Public Health Wales a WHO Collaborating Centre on ‘Investment for Health and Well-being’ (WHO CC), focusing on taking forward a sustainable early intervention, people-centred, long-term investment approach across sectors and organisations.
The PHCU, hosted by Bangor University, links directly into the WHOCC and aims to respond to emerging needs for academic support in line with Public Health Wales’ strategic priorities:
- Influencing the wider determinants of health
- Promoting mental and social well-being
- Promoting healthy behaviours
- Delivering excellent public health services
- Supporting a sustainable health and care system
- Tackling public health effects of climate change
The post will provide research support to a programme of work being implemented by the Public Health Collaborating Unit; a Public Health/Academic collaborative funded by Public Health Wales. The post holder will be part of the School of Health at Bangor University and based in their academic offices in Wrexham.
The post-holder will support an evaluation of trauma-informed training being conducted nationally in Wales.
The work plan will be led by Dr Kat Ford (Research Fellow) at Bangor University and Professor Karen Hughes (Research and Capacity Development Manager) at Public Health Wales.
- To support the research team in the collection and analysis of qualitative data. This may include: organising and undertaking semi-structured interviews / taking consent / data management, coding and analyses / preparation of research outputs.
- To support the research team in the analysis of quantitative data. This may include: data management / data coding / data analyses / preparation of tables and figures for research outputs.
- To contribute to evidence reviews. This may include: study selection / data extraction / quality assessment.
- To contribute to the development of research outputs. This may include: supporting the production of reports and journal publications / helping in the preparation of materials for presentation to conferences / liaising with external providers for design and translation of research outcomes.
- To assist and support the administration of the projects. This may include; arranging research related meetings / arranging data collection / circulating information / preparing reports for funders.
- The post holder will be expected to participate in performance review and developmental activities.

Qualifications/Training
Essential:
- Postgraduate (Masters) degree with a strong research component in a health, public health or other psychological or sociological subject.
Experience/Knowledge
Essential:
- Previous experience of techniques related to the area of research, including undertaking qualitative research and analysing quantitative data.
- Previous experience of working in applied public health research.
- Previous experience of systematic literature reviews.
- Understanding and application of research and information governance processes, policies and procedures.
- Knowledge and interest in specific areas related to the post.
