Barnsley Hospice is looking for an ambitious, commercially minded and inspirational Head of Retail to lead the strategic development of our retail operation. This is an exciting opportunity to shape the future of our retail portfolio, maximise income generation and play a vital role in supporting specialist palliative and end-of-life care for people across Barnsley.
About the Role
As Head of Retail, you will lead Barnsley Hospice's retail division with responsibility for our Retail Hub, ecommerce operations, retail events, distribution and logistics.
Reporting to the Director of Income Generation, you will develop and deliver an ambitious retail strategy focused on increasing sales, profitability and long-term sustainability. You will be responsible for identifying opportunities to grow our retail estate, optimising Gift Aid income, enhancing the customer experience and ensuring our retail operation continues to thrive in an increasingly competitive environment.
This is a strategic leadership role requiring a commercially focused individual who can inspire and develop teams, lead transformational change and work collaboratively across the Hospice to maximise opportunities for income growth.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the development and delivery of Barnsley Hospice's Retail Strategy, ensuring sustainable income growth and long-term commercial success.
- Provide inspirational leadership to the Retail Team, creating a high-performing, inclusive and customer-focused culture.
- Drive sales and profitability across our Retail Hub, ecommerce platforms and retail events.
- Identify opportunities to expand the Hospice's retail portfolio through securing and opening new shop locations.
- Develop commercial initiatives to maximise donated stock, Gift Aid and retail performance.
- Monitor sales performance and key performance indicators, using data and insight to inform strategic decision-making.
- Develop budgets, forecasts and commercial reports, ensuring effective financial management and performance monitoring.
- Lead operational improvements, embedding best practice, governance and consistent retail standards across all locations.
- Develop and implement a sustainable volunteering strategy to support future retail growth.
- Work collaboratively with Fundraising, Marketing and Communications colleagues to maximise income generation opportunities and raise awareness of Barnsley Hospice.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation, Health & Safety requirements, safeguarding responsibilities and Hospice policies.
- Participation in the Senior Manager On-Call rota and travel between Hospice retail locations

- Hours: Full Time (37.5 hours per week)
- Salary: £51,150 per annum

About You
We are looking for someone who:
- Has significant senior retail leadership experience across multiple sites with a strong record of delivering commercial success.
- Has extensive experience of leading, motivating and developing high-performing teams.
- Is highly commercial with excellent financial, analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Has proven experience delivering sales growth, improving profitability and implementing transformational change.
- Has strong strategic planning skills and the ability to identify new opportunities for retail growth.
- Has excellent communication, influencing and stakeholder management skills.
- Has experience using retail management systems, EPOS and performance reporting tools to drive decision-making.
- Has a customer-first approach and a passion for delivering exceptional retail experiences.
- Holds a full UK driving licence and is able to travel between Hospice sites.
- Shares the values of Barnsley Hospice and is committed to making a positive difference to people living with a life-limiting illness and those closest to them.
Experience within the charity retail sector, ecommerce operations, warehouse management or opening new retail premises would be advantageous but is not essential.
